Job Description

Joffrey Ballet School is seeking enthusiastic, creative, and reliable dance pianists to accompany ballet classes for our various divisions at our studio location in Long Island City, Queens. Ballet pianists supply the music for ballet classes, adding emotional elements to inspire dancers based on the teacher's demonstrations of meter, phrasing, and rhythm.

About the role

This is a part-time, hourly position where musicians report to the Music Director. Weekly hours vary depending on the pianist's availability.

Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with teachers to play an appropriate range of music for varying ages and levels, adapting to different teaching styles.
• Accompany dance classes, primarily classical ballet, but also other styles as needed.

Requirements

• Professional-level pianist with demonstrable improvisational skill.
• 18 or older and permitted to work in the United States.
• Professional and courteous with students, faculty, and administrative staff.
• Willing to commit to confirmed classes with minimal cancellations.
• Punctual in keeping to schedules.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience playing for ballet classes.
• Ability to play a variety of styles, especially classical, ragtime/jazz, and Broadway show tunes.
• Skill in rapidly assessing and adjusting to the needs of teachers and students.
• Ability to simplify playing for children’s classes, including playing nursery rhymes.
• Quick adaptability to suit different teachers, dance styles, ages, and abilities.
• Experience playing for modern dance classes.

Pay

$40 per hour.
