JGH Phlebotomist
Provides clerical and receptionist services for the laboratory department. Collects blood from patients, checks quality of blood, and assumes responsibility for safety and comfort of patients following established standards and practices.
Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Completion of an approved phlebotomy training course, or demonstrated experience as a phlebotomist
Responsibilities
- Keeps detailed records of all tests performed, verifies physician orders by reviewing charts, and notifies patient and physician of any tests requiring recollection
- Sorts reports by physician and faxes or mails them to all authorized recipients
- Documents all actions with the time, fax number, and confirmation verification for all reports faxed
- Sends copies of Pathology and Reference Lab reports to medical records and physicians
- Follows up on outstanding Pathology or Reference Lab tests to verify completion and requests reports if needed
- Files all work done in the laboratory, including Pathology and Reference Lab reports
- Cares for and maintains supplies, equipment, and work area; requisitions supplies and equipment; alerts supervisor to defective equipment and supplies
- Collects blood and urine samples from patients as directed
- Properly identifies all patients and specimens using two unique patient identifiers and non-passive, verbal verification by the patient when possible
- Verifies physician orders before specimen collection to avoid duplicate venipunctures
- Provides appropriate care utilizing knowledge and skill according to the age of the patient (neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric)
- Assesses data reflective of the patient’s status and interprets appropriate information to identify patient requirements relative to age-specific needs
- Provides care as described in the department’s policies and procedures
- Assists in patient care prior to, during, and after collection
- Performs courier duties for on-campus physicians
- Collects specimens at health fairs, nursing homes, and outreach services
