About the Role

This position at our Austin, Texas headquarters will be filled at one of two levels—Java Developer Associate or Java Developer—based on the selected candidate’s education and experience.

Responsibilities

Java Developer Associate

• Application Development
  • Codes, tests, and debugs programs written in a variety of software languages with primary focus on Java.
  • Writes basic unit tests based on provided examples.
  • Builds simple to routine SQL statements and stored procedures.
  • Generates reports using report creation tools.
  • Attends and participates in code reviews.
  • Documents existing processes for TRS Staff to utilize as reference.
  • Performs research, analysis, or development tasks as assigned.
• Support Functions
  • May assist in researching, compiling, and analyzing data; entering data into databases and other automated applications; and preparing simple queries and reports.
  • May review forms, correspondence, reports, and other documents for completeness and acceptability.
  • May assist in reviewing and analyzing agency policies, procedures, and forms and recommending changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Assists in completing special projects and performs other work as assigned.

Java Developer

• Software Application Projects
  • Leads small to large scale software application projects with significant impact on TRS's ability to serve its membership, including developing and implementing project plans and coordinating the work of staff assigned to the project.
  • Performs high-level analysis of end user business processes and automation needs.
  • Develops new applications and programs or enhancements to existing applications and programs to better meet those needs.
  • Codes, tests, and debugs programs written in a variety of software languages with primary focus on Java.
  • Documents programming logic and actions, and drafts user procedures.
  • Participates in or leads code reviews and demonstrations of programs and applications.
• Support
  • Responds to requests for assistance routed by Helpdesk staff, and troubleshoots and resolves application-related problems for agency staff as needed.
  • Develops and documents technology standards for the agency.
  • Provides training and technical assistance to IT staff.

Requirements

• Required Education:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, computer engineering, information technology or a closely related field.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and additional full-time experience in computer programming or related experience may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis.
• Required Experience:
  • Java Developer Associate: One (1) year of full-time experience in computer programming.
  • Java Developer:
    • Three (3) years of full-time directly related, progressively responsible experience in computer programming or a closely related field.
    • One (1) year of full-time directly related, progressively responsible experience developing web applications using Java, J2EE/EJB or a closely related field.
    • One (1) year of full-time directly related, progressively responsible experience leading major software application projects or a closely related field.
  • Experience may be concurrent. A master's degree or doctoral degree in a closely related field may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Java Developer Associate

• Previous experience in software development through an internship, boot camp, or formal work environment.
• Experience developing applications using Java J2EE/EJB and/or Angular.
• Experience using Microsoft SQL Server including experience with SSRS, SSIS and/or writing SQL queries and stored procedures.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools responsibly (e.g., code generation, testing support, analysis) with an understanding of model limitations, data privacy, and ethical use.
• Experience working with business intelligence, e-signature, and/or UX/UI development.
• Experience working in or knowledge of Agile software development.

Java Developer

• Experience with requirements gathering and refinement, creating specifications, developing code to address requirements, conducting unit testing, responding to quality assurance findings, and maintaining those applications once they have been deployed.
• Experience developing applications using Java J2EE/EJB and/or Angular.
• Experience managing projects and developing applications utilizing a well-defined systems development lifecycle methodology (SDLC).
• Experience using Microsoft SQL Server including experience with SSRS, SSIS and/or writing SQL queries and stored procedures.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools responsibly (e.g., code generation, testing support, analysis) with an understanding of model limitations, data privacy, and ethical use.
• Experience working with business intelligence, e-signature, and/or UX/UI development.
• Experience working in or knowledge of Agile software development.
• Experience building REST and SOAP based web services.
