Java Backend Developer

About the role

We are seeking a Java Backend Developer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience designing, developing and supporting Java-based backend applications using Spring Boot, microservices and RESTful APIs. This role requires close collaboration with product owners, architects, QA, DevOps and business stakeholders to deliver scalable, secure and reliable technology solutions.

Work model: Hybrid. This is a hybrid position open to qualified applicants in Mountain View, CA, or in New York requesting 3 days per week at Cognizant’s or Client’s office. Responsibilities

• Develop, enhance and maintain Java-based backend applications using Spring Boot and microservices architecture.
• Design, build and consume RESTful APIs that support business and platform capabilities.
• Analyse business and technical requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions.
• Participate in architecture, design, development, testing, deployment and production support activities.
• Write clean, reusable and maintainable code aligned with coding standards and engineering best practices.
• Collaborate with product owners, architects, QA engineers, DevOps teams and other stakeholders throughout the delivery lifecycle.
• Perform code reviews and help ensure application performance, security, reliability and maintainability.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues in a timely manner.
• Contribute to CI/CD implementation, automation initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
• Mentor junior developers and support technical knowledge sharing across the team.

Requirements

• 6+ years of strong hands-on experience with Java backend development.
• Experience developing applications using Spring Boot and microservices architecture.
• Experience designing, developing and integrating RESTful APIs.
• Strong understanding of software design principles, coding standards and application lifecycle practices.
• Experience with application troubleshooting, debugging and production support.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams in an Agile delivery environment.
• Experience contributing to CI/CD pipelines, automation or DevOps-aligned delivery practices.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

Qualifications (Preferred)

• Experience supporting enterprise-scale applications in a client-facing delivery environment.
• Familiarity with cloud, containerization or modern deployment practices.
• Experience mentoring junior developers or supporting technical enablement across teams.

Pay

The annual salary for this position will be between $55,350 to $92,000 per year depending on experience and other qualifications. This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program and stock awards, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
