About the Role

The Custodian/Janitorial Worker will be responsible for the care and maintenance of the parish facilities and grounds. This position requires knowledge of minor repairs both indoors and outdoors, including basic and preventive maintenance to ensure safe and efficient grounds and facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and care for assigned areas and equipment (dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming).
  • Check grounds for litter/garbage and unsafe conditions.
  • Identify and report building and ground issues in need of repair or attention.
  • Observe and adhere to all safe work and health policies and regulations.
  • Lift and carry supplies, equipment, deliveries, etc. weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Replace light bulbs as needed.
  • Replace filters on all facilities’ air conditioners, furnaces, etc. as recommended.
  • Set up rooms as requested (tables, chairs, microphones, chalkboards, etc.).
  • Perform and document routine inspection and maintenance activities.
  • Keep buildings and property clean, attractive, well-maintained, and energy efficient.
  • Stock and maintain a cost-effective inventory of custodial cleaning supplies, paper, toiletries, lighting, and maintenance/repair supplies.
  • Assist staff and volunteers with manual tasks as needed.
  • Attend Buildings & Grounds meetings as necessary.
  • Perform any other duties as required by the Pastor.

Requirements

  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Prior custodian/janitorial experience preferred.
  • Ability to perform with minimal daily supervision.
  • Knowledge and/or experience working with cleaning equipment and chemicals.
  • Must be proactive in support of the Church and Parish purpose, goals, policies, and programs.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
  • Combination of education, training, and/or experience to effectively perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the job.

Physical Demands

  • Spend 80-90% of work time standing, squatting, lifting, or kneeling, performing a wide variety of moderate physical activity both indoors and outdoors.
  • Lift and carry tools, equipment, or material weighing up to 30 lbs.
  • Use of ladders and climbing up to 30 feet high to maintain facilities when necessary.

Work Environment

  • Relate well, communicate professionally, and courteously with staff, volunteers, parishioners, and children.
  • Maintain a neat appearance.
