Jail Screening Intern - UNPAID

This is an unpaid internship position to learn the day-to-day operations of Pretrial Jail Screening. As time allows during the semester, there may be opportunities to learn and observe Pretrial Supervision and OWI programs as well.

Responsibilities

  • Observe and participate in all essential functions of the Jail Screener position to gain a full understanding of the position.
  • Assist the Jail Screeners with preparing Public Safety Assessment reports to court officials to assist in making release decisions.
  • Review CCAP and NCIC data to obtain criminal history of individuals booked into the jail.
  • Attend intake court to observe the process.
  • Enter data into the AWARDS database for statistical tracking.

Requirements

  • Pursuing an Undergraduate degree in criminal justice or related fields.
  • Communication – ability to provide information effectively with a diverse population (the persons we serve, supervisor, colleagues, and program partners) in writing and oral communications.
  • Technological Aptitude – Ability to use general technological skills throughout daily job (e.g., Email, Internet, Microsoft 365).

Schedule

  • Minimum of 1 semester and 10 hours per week.
  • Work hours will be primarily between 5:30 AM and 3:30 PM, with the possibility of occasional Sunday work.

Other Information

Physical Demands: Duties require good hearing and the ability to communicate verbally; hand and finger dexterity for data entry and typing.

Work Environment: Most of the work will be done in the WCS assigned office at the Waukesha County Jail. Has contact with a wide variety of individuals including individuals with pending criminal charges, courthouse and jail personnel, various criminal justice agencies, and other WCS staff. The Waukesha County jail requires a background check through their agency to obtain access to the jail.
