ITS Fiber Optic Technician
About the role
This role supports express lanes, tolling, ITS, and field communications systems across multiple agencies. The incumbent will be responsible for installing, splicing, testing, and troubleshooting fiber optic networks and handling electrical work that supports roadside and industrial systems.
Responsibilities
- Install, terminate, splice, and test fiber optic cable (including 144ct–288ct+).
- Perform OTDR, power meter, and loss testing with accurate, reportable results.
- Install and maintain electrical systems up to 480V (service pedestals, transformers, breakers, grounding).
- Support deployment and maintenance of Yunex field cabinets, network switches, cameras, sensors, and related ITS/tolling equipment.
- Interpret splice plans, wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and construction drawings.
- Conduct preventative maintenance and inspections across fiber and electrical assets.
- Coordinate with PG&E, Caltrans, and partner contractors for access, outages, and energization.
- Follow Yunex safety standards: traffic control awareness, PPE compliance, LOTO, hazard assessments.
- Complete daily field reports, documentation, and as-builts with accuracy and accountability.
- Participate in night work and emergency response as required.
Requirements
- 3+ years in fiber installation, splicing, and troubleshooting.
- 3+ years in industrial or commercial electrical work.
- Strong knowledge of NEC, grounding, conduit installation, and power distribution.
- Proficiency with OTDR, fusion splicing equipment, and fiber troubleshooting tools.
- Able to work independently in field conditions and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Experience with ITS, traffic signals, tolling, transportation infrastructure, and Caltrans environments.
- Familiarity with PG&E service requirements and utility coordination.
- Certifications: FOA, ETA, OSHA 10/30, CPR/First Aid, Journeyman Electrician.
- Understanding of IP networks, switches, and field device connectivity.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing at heights over 15 feet to access traffic signal equipment and related infrastructure.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds of tools, equipment, and materials as part of installation and maintenance tasks.
- Requires manual dexterity for handling small components and wiring in confined spaces.
- Ability to walk, sit, stand, and drive for extended periods; occasional riding as a passenger to job sites.
- Ability to distinguish the range of color spectrum.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds for extended periods.
- Ability to climb and work from ladders and rooftops.
- Ability to stand, walk and work at heights.
- Work outdoors near active traffic and varying weather conditions.
- Ability to hear traffic, alarms and communication devices.
Training Requirements
- Valid DL, CDL preferred.
- OSHA 10 or 30 preferred.
- Bucket Truck and Aerial Lift certified.
- Heavy Equipment operation certification.
