IT Writer and Communications Specialist

This is a contract role that is hybrid in Boston 3× a week. Candidates must be able to adhere to that schedule. No visas or third parties.

About the role

We're seeking an IT Writer & Communications Specialist to help translate complex technology initiatives into clear, engaging communications that drive user understanding and adoption. This role will partner closely with IT teams, project managers, leadership, and business stakeholders to support major system implementations, process changes, and digital transformation initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Develop communication plans for IT projects, system changes, and technology implementations
• Translate complex technical concepts into clear messaging for diverse, non-technical audiences
• Create content across email, web, digital signage, training materials, FAQs, quick-reference guides, and other channels
• Build targeted messaging around what's changing, why it's changing, and how users will be impacted
• Partner with technical teams, project managers, leadership, and stakeholders throughout project lifecycles
• Support organizational change initiatives and drive adoption of new technologies
• Monitor communication effectiveness and continuously improve communication strategies

Requirements

• Strong experience in communications, marketing, technical writing, or change communications
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to quickly understand and simplify complex technical concepts
• Experience working cross-functionally with IT, project teams, and business stakeholders
• Strong project management, organization, and attention to detail
• Advanced Microsoft Office skills, including Word, SharePoint, Excel, Teams, and Outlook
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with ITIL, change management, or IT service management
• Experience with CMS platforms such as WordPress or Contentful
• Familiarity with UX, accessibility, multimedia content, and communication analytics
• Experience within higher education or another complex organization
• Interest in leveraging AI and emerging technologies to improve content and communications
