IT Sr. Database Administrator

About the role

The Senior Database Administrator (DBA) leads the planning, design, development, release management, troubleshooting, and support of database components, software systems, and third-party IT products. This position is responsible for standards and design of physical data storage, maintenance, access, and security administration, as well as troubleshooting application or data issues. The Senior DBA ensures appropriate security, backup, and recovery on Database Management Systems; configures database parameters; prototypes designs against logical data models; and defines data repository requirements, data dictionaries, and warehousing requirements.

The role optimizes database access and allocates resources for optimum configuration, performance, and cost. The Senior DBA supports multiple high-impact, high-importance, and high-complexity databases with concurrent users, ensuring control, integrity, and accessibility of data. This position is part of an IT team accountable for 24x7 production support (including on-call duties) and new projects.

The ideal candidate will have led database development projects, advised management on new or optimal technologies, and mentored less senior professionals.

Responsibilities

• Manage and maintain all production and non-production databases, software systems, and third-party IT products.
• Design and implement physical data storage, maintenance, access, and security administration standards.
• Troubleshoot application and data issues, communicating solutions, risks, and issues to technical management.
• Ensure security, backup, and recovery on Database Management Systems.
• Configure database parameters and prototype designs against logical data models.
• Define data repository requirements, data dictionaries, and warehousing requirements.
• Optimize database access and allocate resources for performance and cost efficiency.
• Support high-impact, high-complexity databases with multiple concurrent users.
• Participate in 24x7 production support, including on-call duties.
• Lead database development projects and advise on new or optimal technologies.
• Mentor and train less senior professionals.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
• 7 years of applicable work experience, with 5 years as a DBA.
• Experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
• Expertise with healthcare industry and COTS products.
• Understanding of major EHR solutions.
• Understanding of server virtualization technologies.
• Ability to work off-hours in a 24x7 production support environment.
