IT Biomedical Engineering Technician II (BMET II)

This position maintains medical equipment readiness, ensures conformance with manufacturer specifications, and requires travel between HMH's sites as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Tests and calibrates medical devices (preventive maintenance).
  • Troubleshoots medical devices in a clinical setting and/or bench/depot setting (corrective maintenance).
  • Installs and inspects new trial and/or demonstration equipment prior to use (incoming inspection).
  • Ensures manufactured software, parts, and/or devices for use in patient care are safe and meet standards.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory processes (e.g., CMS, FDA GMP, NJDOH).
  • Manages medical software/hardware systems (e.g., PACS Administrator, Integration Specialist, Alarm Management, RTLS Systems).
  • Educates oneself on the proper use, care, and maintenance of medical devices.
  • Reviews technical manuals for product specifications and safety.
  • Documents all maintenance and repairs and maintains records of maintenance activities.
  • Troubleshoots medical device networks to ensure operational effectiveness.
  • Maintains inventory for repair parts, supplies, and technical resources.
  • Orders repair parts and/or components and supplies using HMH ERP system(s).
  • Maintains incoming and outgoing equipment log for repair and maintenance.
  • Documents and refers devices not conforming to specification for repair to biomedical engineering leader(s).
  • Transports and sources couriers for maintenance, supplies, and equipment from local vendors.
  • Performs repairs on devices as directed.
  • Stays informed about changes, enhancements, and new features related to equipment.
  • Attends on-the-job training, offsite, and/or out-of-state training that may require travel and overnight stays.
  • Travels to other Hackensack Meridian Health locations (hospitals, urgent care, primary care, etc.) as needed.
  • Participates in on-call duties as directed by BMET Supervisor and Biomedical Engineering Director.
  • Adheres to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
  • Lifts a minimum of 50 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs., and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
  • Performs other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Electronics or Biomedical Engineering Technology with 1 year full-time BMET work experience, or
  • AS degree in Electronics or Biomedical Engineering Technology with 2 years full-time BMET work experience, or
  • Completion of a U.S. military biomedical equipment technology program and 2 years full-time BMET work experience, or
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent with 4 years full-time BMET work experience.
  • Basic understanding of electronic/mechanical devices and ability to communicate their use.
  • Ability to locate and follow manufacturer documentation for device support.
  • Understanding of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Ability to access public FDA 510k information about patient care medical devices.
  • Knowledge of device recalls and their purpose.
  • Understanding of customer service principles.
  • Familiarity with hospital, clinic, or similar operational environments.
  • Unrestricted ability to attend on-the-job, offsite, or out-of-state training requiring travel and overnight stays.
  • Basic understanding of local, state, and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of various types of patient care medical equipment and associated risks.
  • Basic understanding of patient care medical equipment, radiographic equipment, laboratory equipment, and network equipment.
  • Basic terminology used in project management.
  • Knowledge of current technology and its uses in healthcare.
  • Ability to perform duties with little supervision.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AS Degree or higher with 2 years full-time experience in Biomedical Engineering.
  • Current OEM certifications for the support and maintenance of patient care medical devices.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission, CMMS, NJDOH, and other standards.
  • Experience in a hospital environment or with a medical equipment manufacturer.

Pay

Minimum starting rate of $35.17 per hour. The posted rate is a reasonable good-faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting and may vary based on factors such as labor market data, experience, education, certifications, skills, geographic location, internal equity, budget, and grant funding. Full-time and part-time (20+ hours/week) positions include a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and retirement benefits. Some roles may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, commissions, or shift differentials for evening, night, or weekend shifts.
