IT Biomedical Engineering Technician II (BMET II)

The Biomedical Engineering Technician II (BMET II) maintains medical equipment readiness and ensures conformance with manufacturer specifications by performing scheduled maintenance, repairs, end-user support, and installations. BMET technicians support compliance with the Medical Equipment Management Plan (MEMP) to improve patient safety. This position requires travel between HMH's sites as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Tests and calibrates medical devices (preventive maintenance).
  • Troubleshoots medical devices in a clinical setting and/or bench/depot setting (corrective maintenance).
  • Installs and inspects new, trial, and/or demonstration equipment prior to use (incoming inspection).
  • Ensures manufactured software, parts, and/or devices for use in patient care are safe and meet standards.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory processes (e.g., CMS, FDA GMP, NJDOH).
  • Manages medical software/hardware systems (e.g., PACS Administrator, Integration Specialist, Alarm Management, RTLS Systems).
  • Educates oneself on the proper use, care, and maintenance of medical devices.
  • Reviews technical manuals for product specifications and safety.
  • Documents all maintenance and repairs and maintains records of maintenance activities.
  • Troubleshoots medical device networks to ensure operational effectiveness.
  • Maintains inventory for repair parts, supplies, and technical resources.
  • Orders repair parts and/or components and supplies using HMH ERP system(s).
  • Maintains incoming and outgoing equipment log for repair and maintenance.
  • Documents and refers devices not conforming to specification for repair to biomedical engineering leader(s).
  • Transports and sources couriers for maintenance, supplies, and equipment between Biomedical Engineering and device owner sites.
  • Performs repairs on devices as directed.
  • Stays informed about changes, enhancements, and new features related to equipment.
  • Attends on-the-job training, offsite, and/or out-of-state training that may require travel and overnight stays.
  • Travels to other Hackensack Meridian Health locations (hospitals, urgent care, primary care, etc.) as needed.
  • Participates in on-call duties as directed by BMET Supervisor and Biomedical Engineering Director.
  • Adheres to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
  • Lifts a minimum of 50 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs., and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
  • Performs other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Electronics or Biomedical Engineering Technology with 1 year full-time BMET work experience, or
  • AS degree in Electronics or Biomedical Engineering Technology with 2 years full-time BMET work experience, or
  • Completion of a U.S. military biomedical equipment technology program and two years full-time BMET work experience, or
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent with 4 years full-time BMET work experience.
  • Basic understanding of electronic/mechanical devices.
  • Ability to communicate the use of basic/common patient care medical devices.
  • Ability to locate and follow manufacturer documentation used to support devices.
  • Understanding of computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Ability to access public FDA 510k information about patient care medical devices.
  • Knowledge of device recalls and their purpose.
  • Understanding and support of customer service principles.
  • Familiarity with the operations and environment supported (hospital, clinic, etc.).
  • Unrestricted ability to attend on-the-job, offsite, and/or out-of-state training requiring travel and overnight stays.
  • Basic understanding of local, state, and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of various types of patient care medical equipment and associated risks.
  • Basic understanding of patient care medical equipment, radiographic equipment, laboratory equipment, and network equipment.
  • Basic terminology used in project management.
  • Knowledge of current technology and its uses in healthcare.
  • Performs duties with little supervision or as needed.
  • Experience with a wide range of electromechanical devices, computers, networks, and software used in healthcare.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AS Degree or higher with 2 years full-time experience in Biomedical Engineering.
  • Current OEM certifications for the support and maintenance of patient care medical devices.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission, CMMS, NJDOH, and other standards.
  • Experience in a hospital environment or with a medical equipment manufacturer, working on patient care equipment.

Pay

Minimum rate of $35.17 per hour. The starting rate of pay is provided for informational purposes only and is not a guarantee of a specific offer. Posted rates may vary based on labor market data, experience, education, certifications, skills, geographic location, internal equity, and budget considerations.
