About the Role
This is a full-time, in-person, essential position serving as an irrigation technician for the Northern District of the Division of Facilities Management (DFM). The role manages all irrigation-related operations, including system start-up and shutdown, emergency repairs, system monitoring, and performance optimization using web-based controls and manual irrigation clocks. The position performs irrigation and low-voltage electrical control work to ensure efficient system operation, including oversight of campus well and well pump systems.
Responsibilities
- Independently perform irrigation work related to campus irrigation systems, including inspections, installations, repairs, and monitoring water flow.
- Evaluate irrigation system performance, water flow, pressure, and sprinkler coverage to identify issues and implement corrective actions.
- Adjust irrigation schedules to support water conservation and efficient operations.
- Diagnose irrigation system failures and determine appropriate repair methods based on system conditions and operational needs.
- Troubleshoot and repair low-voltage electrical control systems associated with irrigation operations.
- Evaluate well and pump system performance and implement operational or maintenance adjustments to maintain reliable irrigation service.
- Provide training, guidance, and technical support to staff on irrigation operations, sprinkler repairs, and best practices for irrigation installation and maintenance.
- Review completed irrigation work to ensure compliance with operational standards, best practices, and department expectations.
- Provide performance-related feedback and operational input to the Grounds Supervisor.
- Apply herbicides and/or pesticides to trees, shrubs, and lawns according to federal and state regulations.
- Maintain shrubs with electric trimmers; irrigate, aerate, fertilize, and preserve lawns, trees, and shrubs.
- Operate lawn mowers, tractors, dump trucks, snowplows, trenchers, and state vehicles.
- Prevent hazardous accidents by removing ice, snow, debris, and sand from parking lots, walkways, and door entrances.
- Monitor and repair slip, trip, and fall hazards relating to sidewalks, pathways, and building entrances.
- Ensure proper disposal of disregarded materials by unloading them at proper disposal sites.
- Repair roads and streets using proper tools and materials in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Ensure safe access to facilities during inclement weather by operating snowplow trucks, snow blowers, tractors, and hand shovels.
- Remove ice and snow from sidewalks, parking lots, and grounds using hand tools, shovels, and small bladed vehicles; apply ice melt and sand as needed.
- Operate a variety of manual tools and equipment, including tractors, plows, lifts, hand and riding mowers, trimmers, edgers, and gators to maintain lawns, trees, bedded plants, and flowers.
- Mow grass, trim, rake, plant, transplant, spray, and trim flowers, shrubs, and small trees; cut and remove limbs from dead trees.
- Operate, maintain, set up, and clean grounds and irrigation-related equipment and vehicles in support of campus operations.
- Assist with maintaining safe, functional, and well-maintained campus outdoor environments.
- Assist in the design and implementation of landscaping projects, including design, customer input, cost estimating, and project management.
- Provide assistance to other departments such as electrical, plumbing, and construction by removing building debris, excavating ditches, and supporting water main repairs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- At least two (2) years of full-time experience with:
- Commercial irrigation experience, including installing irrigation systems, system start-up and shutdown, emergency repairs, system monitoring, and performance optimization in environments such as parks, golf courses, schools, or campuses.
- Large-scale landscaping and grounds maintenance experience in environments such as parks, golf courses, schools, or campuses.
- Must be a Colorado resident at the time of application and maintain residency throughout employment.
- Must pass a full pre-employment criminal background check; felony convictions or convictions related to job duties may disqualify applicants.
- Must possess and maintain a valid, non-restricted Colorado driver’s license; out-of-state license holders must obtain a Colorado license within 30 days of employment.
- Must successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Check and be willing to drive state vehicles as part of daily work assignments.
- Must be willing to receive an annual influenza vaccination or provide a medical or religious exemption.
- Must successfully pass a Tuberculosis (TB) test.
- Must be available to work various hours, including outside normal business hours, for coverage, weather-related issues, and essential/emergency services.
- Must be available for after-hours call-backs to perform essential and/or emergency services without delay.
- Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose this information on the application.
Working Conditions
- Use, handling, or exposure to hazardous materials, proximity to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock, and working in high or exposed places.
- Essential position requiring response to unexpected or unusual work hours to perform emergency services without delay or interruption.
- Call-back pay applies for eligible nonexempt employees required to work before or after a scheduled shift, entitling them to a minimum of two hours of regular base pay or pay for actual time worked, whichever is greater.
