IPS Lead
About the Role
As a lead designer, you will supervise and provide technical direction to a team of designers, ensuring the total delivery of electrical and instrumentation deliverables and services on time, within budget, and meeting quality expectations. This role involves advanced design work, serving as a technical specialist for complex assignments, and requires extensive progressive experience in electrical and instrumentation design. You will work under minimal supervision, utilizing project controls for cost, schedule, and quality.
Responsibilities
- Utilize department design and drafting standards.
- Recognize and communicate project scope, specifications, and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.
- Identify and communicate scope and design changes promptly.
- Provide on-site assistance during startup.
- Offer technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel.
- Coordinate work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.
- Report the current status of project work, including delays or improvements in the projected finish date, to the discipline lead.
- Confer with clients to determine scopes of work and address technical matters.
- Direct designers to complete tasks efficiently.
- Produce 480VAC, 15kV/5kV equipment specifications, and electrical installation specifications with engineering review and approval.
- Understand the skills and experience required to perform design functions.
- Proactively lead and coordinate the efforts of a design staff to achieve scope, schedule, and budget objectives.
- Mentor subordinates and participate in team or cross-discipline checks to ensure coordination.
- Check calculations made by other designers for accuracy, conformance to codes, specifications, and good engineering practice.
- Determine construction quantities and provide construction cost estimates.
- Delegate work to designers based on their technical skills and experience, ensuring efficient progress and quality.
- Consult with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure efficient progress and quality.
- Participate in planning training programs, continuous education opportunities, and professional development of staff.
- Identify possible changes in scope and draft change orders.
Requirements
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting is required.
- 25 or more years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation drafting and design.
Skills
- Familiarity with the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Ability to perform lighting level calculations, size wire, conduit, and overcurrent protection for lighting and power applications.
- Ability to perform voltage drop calculations and route conduit and cable tray.
- Ability to calculate tray and conduit fill and determine motor control center loading.
- Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.
- Ability to create accurate electrical installation documents from vendor equipment drawings.
- Ability to determine load center unit substation loading and develop equipment specifications for 480VAC equipment (e.g., motor control centers, variable frequency drives, motors, load center unit substations).
- Familiarity with 15kV power system equipment and installation techniques both above and below ground.
- Ability to develop equipment specifications for 15kV/5kV equipment (e.g., switchgear, load break switches, motor control centers) and perform calculations for short circuit and overcurrent protective device ratings.
- Ability to develop electrical installation specifications, construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets for projects.
- Ability to determine construction material quantities and develop design criteria and scope of work.
- Ability to forecast hours to complete professional services and develop staffing plans based on deliverables and project schedules.
- Ability to identify required information and proactively obtain it, coordinating with other disciplines regarding design development and changes.
- Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Working knowledge of 2D AutoCAD and MicroStation; 3D AutoCAD is desirable.
- Programming experience with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Human Machine Interface (HMI), and/or Distributed Control System (DCS) equipment.
- Ability to lead a small team to deliver on commitments and coordinate with the process group for efficient equipment layouts and space usage.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with highly developed virtual team and cross-divisional relationship skills.
- Ability to provide interoffice execution support with no supervision.
