About the role
This position supports one of SouthState’s most prolific business units and is a critical member of the team, ensuring ongoing growth of the business line and remarkable client experiences. Under the direction of the Director of Government & Not-for-Profit Banking, you will support new client development and relationship management activities for the team. The role serves Government & Not-for-Profit Banking professionals and provides secondary support to professionals in the Bank’s broker-dealer (SouthState|DuncanWilliams) Public Finance department throughout client origination and management processes.
Responsibilities
- Uphold the Bank’s Core Values and Guiding Principles, delivering them professionally to local government and not-for-profit clients.
- Enhance the Bank’s reputation in the marketplace and define its unique value proposition.
- Support senior teammates and deal teams in developing complex financial models and providing analytical support, including analyzing financial statements, projections, credit screening, loan structuring, and prospect pitching.
- Create and utilize analytical financial models, such as financial projections, discounted cash flow analysis, municipal bond sizing for new money offerings, refunding/restructuring, and historical/projected cash flow analysis.
- Perform research and analysis on government, not-for-profit, and corporate entities, industries, and transactions to support client activities and risk mitigation strategies.
- Assemble and maintain proprietary and non-proprietary data resources, including detailed industry information.
- Conduct research on current and prospective clients using all available transactional information.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of all work within department guidelines.
- Monitor the financial position of established clients and report opportunities or irregularities to senior teammates.
- Foster a constructive workplace environment that aligns with the Bank’s Core Values.
- Develop strong working relationships with Commercial and Corporate banking teams to realize cross-departmental opportunities.
- Undertake special projects related to the job function as determined by Government & Not-for-Profit Bankers and the broker-dealer’s Public Finance team.
- Participate in community-related activities.
- Ensure strict compliance with the Bank’s and broker-dealer’s policies, procedures, Code of Conduct, and regulatory guidelines.
- Provide support to other employees through positive interactions.
- Continuously update skills through professional training and development, including cross-training opportunities.
- Position may require regular before/after normal business hours or out-of-town travel.
- Perform all other tasks, responsibilities, or duties as directed by the Government & Not-for-Profit or Public Finance Teams.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or accounting is recommended for understanding financial statements and industry evaluations. Alternatively, at least five years of finance/accounting-related work experience may substitute for the degree.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal relationship management skills.
- Sound credit and risk management judgment.
- Proficiency with PC software, including Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent organizational and teamwork skills.
- Proven track record of working in a cross-functional environment.
- Knowledge of financial and accounting concepts to evaluate financial models, client audits, and operational risks.
- Experience in financial statement analysis and understanding of client cash flow cycles and risk management considerations.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
- Required annual compliance training, procurement of appropriate licensing for municipal securities, and continuing education.
- Some industry-specific software training and usage may be necessary.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to remain seated or work standing in a confined area on a computer for a minimum of four hours each workday.
- Must be able to constantly use hands and fingers to enter data or answer phones throughout most of an eight-hour shift.
- Must be able to hear and communicate with coworkers and customers throughout the day.
- May need to lift up to 25 pounds one to two times a day.
- Position may require regular before/after normal business hours or out-of-town travel.
