Investigator - Juvenile Division

About the role

The District Attorney’s Office has an opening for an Investigator in the Juvenile Division. The following duties are normal for this position; other duties may be required and assigned.

Responsibilities

• Investigates crimes involving juveniles; obtains police reports, crime scene reports, crime lab reports, complaints, petitions, citations, photos, audio recordings, video recordings, written statements, phone records, medical records, and other accounts of crimes committed
• Reviews those items for probable cause, for evidence of crimes committed, for witnesses needed for court, and for potential problems in proving the case
• Compiles an investigative report that summarizes all parties' roles in the case and the events that took place
• Visits the crime scene if necessary and takes additional material, photos, or measurements, or creates sketches
• Ensures that required analysis of evidence has been completed reviews current law for changes that may have a bearing on case presentation
• Obtains criminal histories on witnesses, victims, as requested; prepares and executes search warrants; and coordinates transportation for victims and witnesses
• Reviews and publishes the daily transport list of juveniles that have court the following day to DJJ, defense attorneys and assistant district attorneys
• Coincides with Assistant District Attorneys to review case files and determine what investigation is needed; assist ADAs with witness and victim interviews, some of which take place in the field; helps formulate case and courtroom strategies
• Coincides with police; obtains property or evidence from the police department or crime lab that will be needed for court; interviews police officers or detectives regarding their role in the investigation; and delivers subpoenas to officers or detectives at least 24 hours prior to any court hearing
• Coincides with victims and witnesses; confirms identity of witnesses and victims; determines current location of witnesses and victims; interviews witnesses or victims; hand-delivers subpoenas for court; conducts background and criminal history checks on potential witnesses; locates witnesses that have moved or are resisting contact; and transports witnesses or victims to and from court as needed
• Attends court and participates in the prosecution of cases; coordinates with police officers regarding their testimony; coordinates with victims and witnesses regarding their testimony; ensures that all evidence needed for court is properly prepared and made available; assists ADAs in presentation of the case in court; testifies on investigative actions and findings; prepares exhibits for court; and assists in presentation of exhibits in court
• Communicates with supervisor, investigators, law enforcement personnel, judges, attorneys, victims, witnesses, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems

Requirements

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field; five years of experience in criminal justice or criminal investigation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Previous experience working in a prosecutor’s office is preferred.

Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities

• The ideal candidate must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license
• Must possess and maintain Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) certification
• Must be able to multitask and work under occasionally stressful time constraints
