What You Will Do

You will provide investigative and analytical support relative to the enforcement of the criminal tax statutes and related financial crimes in order to encourage and achieve voluntary compliance by taxpayers under South Carolina's tax laws.

  • Conducting ongoing research to identify new information or sources of information
  • Analyzing records and evidence including financial statements, bank records, general ledgers, invoices, and tax returns
  • Maintaining official case files throughout investigations
  • Collecting information obtained from electronic databases, public records, and financial institutions that involve subjects of investigations
  • Providing spreadsheets and analytical reports summarizing information surrounding investigations
  • Investigating complaints, inquiries, or violations of South Carolina laws or regulations
  • Conducting inspections or surveillances of businesses and individuals
  • Coinciding, planning, and assisting with witness interviews and affidavits
  • Serving as a witness or corroborator of interviews
  • Assisting in the preparation for trials by reviewing witness testimony, analyzing evidence, and coordinating witnesses

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A high school diploma and experience conducting investigations or performing other law enforcement duties
  • A bachelor’s degree Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Valid driver's license
  • Required to attend and complete the CLASS 3 basic law enforcement certification program at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy
  • Travel as needed is required and minimal overnight travel required

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in conducting investigations or performing other law enforcement duties
  • An associate's degree and four years of experience conducting investigations or performing other law enforcement duties
  • A high school diploma and six years of experience conducting investigations or performing other law enforcement duties

Hours: Work hours are 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday (37.5 hours per week).

Telework schedule: This position may be eligible to work remotely up to two days per week after one year of employment with SCDOR.

Office location: Depending on space availability, you may have the option to choose which SCDOR office you work in (Columbia, Charleston, Florence, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, or Rock Hill).
