About the role

Ready to work at the intersection of investigative journalism and AI? Join GPTZero as a software engineer and help us uncover and publish groundbreaking investigations on the rise and threat of AI-generated content. You’ll build and run the research engine that powers our widely covered reports, which have earned front-page coverage in the Financial Times, Forbes, The Telegraph, Bloomberg, The Times of India, and other major media outlets.

The ideal candidate thrives at the crossroads of data engineering, storytelling, and AI, with a knack for spotting newsworthy findings and turning raw data into compelling narratives.

Responsibilities

  • Use our AI detection and hallucination detection models to identify compelling examples of AI-generated content on the web and in publishing.
  • Synthesize data into well-written prose, compelling visualizations, and interactive user experiences (vibecoding encouraged).
  • Build search engine query generators and targeted crawlers for large-scale document collection.
  • Develop automations to monitor social feeds and generate investigative leads.
  • Design machine learning ranking and classification systems to detect fabricated content using LLMs.
  • Create robust, scalable data processing pipelines.
  • Improve our models based on performance in new domains and investigations.

Requirements

  • Ability to craft creative and compelling stories using data.
  • 2+ years of experience in Python for developing resilient data pipelines and long-running jobs.
  • 1+ years of experience in SQL for data management, ideally with PostgreSQL.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization to communicate findings to stakeholders.
  • Experience with web scraping and search at scale, including search, LLM, OCR, and data crawling tools.
  • Familiarity with basic cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS).
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, with the ability to bootstrap data acquisition approaches, engage stakeholders, and identify newsworthy content.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience building or vibecoding webpages to display results.
  • Applied ML for ranking and calibration.
  • Infrastructure-as-code and container tooling experience.
  • OSINT and evidence verification experience.
  • Ability to uncover data others can’t.
  • Experience working with media and journalists.

  • Alex (CTO): Former R&D at Uber’s self-driving division and Facebook, holds 3 ML patents, and won Best ML Hack at Stanford’s 2019 and 2021 Hackathons.
  • George (AI Research Lead): PhD from the University of Toronto and ex-AWS research.
  • Edward (CEO): Former investigative journalist at Bellingcat, Microsoft, and the BBC, shaping GPTZero’s brand and community messaging.

You’ll also join a diverse, high-performing team with backgrounds from Google, Meta, Microsoft, Bloomberg ML, Uber, Vector Institute, and MILA, including Y-Combinator and Obama scholarship recipients, and a designer whose work has been featured in the Met.

Pay

Compensation range: $140K – $220K.
