Asbestos Investigator (NYC)
About the role
BSI is hiring a Consulting Specialist – Industrial Hygiene to support projects across the New York City area, with the majority of work supporting the NYC School Construction Authority and additional clients throughout the region. This is a full-time position with benefits, ideal for someone with a scientific background and hands-on field experience looking to grow in the industrial hygiene space. Responsibilities
- Conduct industrial hygiene (IH) exposure assessments, including air and noise monitoring, and develop sampling strategies tailored to NYC regulatory requirements
- Perform hazardous building material surveys in accordance with local and federal guidelines
- Conduct health and safety inspections in the field (e.g., PPE compliance, lockout/tagout, confined space entry, machine guarding)
- Support and implement hazard communication and chemical safety programs across client sites
- Deliver in-person safety and regulatory training programs to clients and contractors as needed
- Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) management systems
- Interpret field data and prepare clear, client-ready technical reports using Microsoft Word and related software tools
- Collaborate with internal project teams and external clients to ensure effective and timely service delivery
- Perform site visits throughout the New York City metro area
- Participate in after-hours and weekend work as needed (e.g., pre-construction activities and contractor oversight)
- Work both independently in the field and on-site
Requirements
- One of the following NYCDEP Asbestos Investigator licenses
- 1.5 years of asbestos related experience working under NYCDEP and/or NYSDOL regulations
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field (e.g., Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, or related discipline)
- 2–5 years of experience in the environmental health & safety, industrial hygiene, or related consulting field
- NYSDOL Asbestos Inspector license
- USEPA Lead Inspector license
- Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills
- Beginner-level Excel skills required
- Familiarity with AutoCAD preferred
- Experience working under NYC-specific regulatory frameworks strongly preferred
- Professional certifications (CIH, CSP, ASP, CHMM, etc.) are a plus
- Must be willing to travel locally and regionally; personal vehicle is preferred but not required
- Willingness to support occasional evening or weekend project needs

Pay
The salary for this position can range from $80,500 to $95,000 annually; the advertised salary range reflects the level, scope and responsibilities of the role.
