About the Role
The Supplies/Equipment/Inventory Coordinator is responsible for basic troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment in Surgical Services. This role coordinates unit in-services for equipment, functions as a resource for the units, and is accountable for equipment trials. Works under the direct supervision of Surgery Managers and in cooperation with Materials Management and Clinical Coordinators for pricing and capital requests. Responsible for equipment control, coordination, and documentation of preventative maintenance and repairs.
Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot problems with equipment, coordinate preventative maintenance and repair, and clean specified equipment.
- Coordinate repair of equipment with clinical equipment maintenance, maintenance department, and/or company representatives.
- Maintain anesthesia machines on a routine schedule and troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment.
- Participate in negotiating preventative maintenance and repair service contracts.
- Teach others preventative maintenance and troubleshooting techniques for equipment and assist staff with equipment-related issues.
- Communicate equipment-related information to appropriate people and document important information.
- Communicate with clinical equipment maintenance for safety checks on all new equipment.
- Establish and organize logs for equipment control, preventative maintenance, and cleaning schedules.
- Develop and provide a positive work environment and contribute to overall team effort.
- Work as a team member with surgery management, clinical coordinators, and materials management departments in pricing new/replacement equipment for all age groups/specialty items.
- Set up trials for new equipment, monitor use, and summarize evaluations.
- Research comparable products regarding effectiveness, safety, use, price, etc., and submit recommendations.
- Function as a Patient Safety Assistant for suicide precautions, including:
- Observation and reporting of patient activities and behaviors, with appropriate response intervention to assure patient safety.
- Demonstrate appropriate communication skills with patients, patient families, and other healthcare providers.
- Practice confidentiality and safety procedures as defined by agency policy and procedure manuals.
- Maintain knowledge level to assist in patient turns and transfers to commode/bathroom.
- Use correct body positioning, proper body mechanics, safe work practices, and personal protective equipment to avoid injury.
- 80% of time spent on observation and prevention of unsafe patient behavior/activity.
- 10% of time spent communicating with the responsible RN about patient status and input to facilitate care planning.
- 5% of time spent accompanying patients for diagnostic tests occasionally.
- 5% of time spent maintaining a clean and orderly environment.
Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Successful completion of hospital core, department-specific, and orientation unit within a reasonable timeframe.
- Skill and proficiency in oral and written grammar, communication, and basic mathematics.
- Mechanically inclined and trained in basic troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment used in surgery.
- Able to read and interpret data from equipment and computers.
- Ability to manage several job tasks simultaneously and function effectively under stressful situations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Ability to provide positive customer service.
- Work may involve regularly lifting bulky or moderately heavy weights (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or handling material/equipment.
- Work which produces levels of mental/visual fatigue typical of jobs performing a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines.
- Work may include operating a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time.
