About the role
The Special Education teacher under the direction of the school principal and/or assistant principal implements research-based instructional strategies to meet the unique needs of assigned students. Responsibilities include developing, nurturing, and sustaining a school and classroom culture conducive to learning, individualizing instruction, and utilizing a variety of support services and settings.
Responsibilities
- Maintain competency in subject matter areas of certification and assignment.
- Employ appropriate methods of assessment to identify student proficiency levels and plan programs tailored to those needs.
- Strive for harmonious and cooperative interpersonal relationships with students, parents, supervisors, administrators, staff, and community members.
- Promote and support School District Goals as outlined in the Board of Education Strategic Plan and NSBSD Pedagogy.
- Participate in educational committees and organizations for personal and professional growth.
- Develop an awareness of local culture and provide bicultural or multicultural instruction.
- Use Rubicon Atlas to develop culture-based units as required.
- Supervise and train instructional paraprofessionals in providing necessary services to students.
- Absorb and adhere to the code of ethics and professional teaching standards.
- Write and submit weekly lesson plans to the Principal and maintain digital copies.
- Adhere to District policies and regulations.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Education required; Master's Degree preferred.
- Experience: 6 years with a Bachelor's Degree, 8 years with a Master's Degree.
- Alaska Teacher Certificate required.
- Three years of experience in education preferred.
- Inupiaq, Language, History & Culture experience preferred.

- Ability to assess student proficiency levels and tailor programs accordingly.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including flexibility, openness, warmth, genuineness, supportiveness, and ability to listen.
- Knowledge of local culture and ability to provide bicultural or multicultural instruction.
- Proficiency in using Rubicon Atlas for culture-based unit development.
- Ability to supervise and train instructional paraprofessionals.
- Compliance with the code of ethics and professional teaching standards.
