Interpreter - Translator

Essential Functions

  • Assists school personnel and Spanish-speaking parents and students to communicate more effectively.
  • Works as an interpreter during parent/teacher and parent/administrator conferences, during administration of tests to students, and during emergency situations in which language is a barrier for resolving the situation.
  • Translates written documents from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English for purposes such as notification regarding District activities, student progress, disciplinary actions, and translation of school records, medical records, notes from parents, etc.
  • Serves as a liaison between the school district and Latino groups and organizations in the community.
  • Affords assistance to school staff in understanding and appreciating the Latino culture.

General Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Translates written documents from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English.
  • Translates orally from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English during conferences, telephone calls, testing, information gathering from other school districts, emergency situations, etc.
  • Aids Spanish-speaking students and their families with the school enrollment process.
  • Adapts language based on the level of the student and parent.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Qualifications

  • American Translators Association Certification (Highly Preferred)
  • High school diploma or equivalent (AA or BA Degree Preferred)

Other Requirements

  • Sit, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand or walk.
  • Occasionally drive to other locations.
  • Frequently interact with the public and other staff members.
  • Close vision required.
  • Lifts up to 30 pounds occasionally.
