Interpreter - Spanish - Kenosha - Part-Time
About the role
Interpreters facilitate basic communication between clinical staff and clients or patients, which includes parents or guardians. Communication may take place in a medical or community setting, providing interpretation, sight translation and/or simple translation on an AVS (After Visit Summary).
Responsibilities
- Facilitate communication between staff and clients or patients and their parents or guardians, before, during and after treatment using less complex medical terminology.
- Provide non-English speaking patients and families with an appropriate sight translation of medical/social/health care information and other important documents from an English version.
- Attend in-services and educational meetings to maintain and enhance professional expertise.
- Attend and contribute to assigned committees, task forces, special projects.
- Translate, proof read, edit, and prepare the final version of written materials in the electronic health record (Epic) or MS Word.
- May provide additional down-time support with scheduling, audits, special projects
- Computer and word processing expertise including MS Word, comfort with an iPad and working in our electronic health record.
- Good customer service skills, strong communication skills and excellent listening skills.
- Effective organizational skills with attention to detail including ability to prioritize and assess needs.
- Ability to multi-task in order to manage interpretation for more than one patient/family at a time.
- Analytical ability to complete audits, proof read translations and review scheduling; making recommendations for change.
Requirements
Medical Interpreter course completion through a Technical School or higher education institution strongly preferred
Requires at minimum a High School graduate or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED).
Must pass verbal and written proficiency tests with an overall score of 80%.
Includes proven Spanish linguistic abilities in medical interpreting and knowledge of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) code of ethics.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology used in primary care and dental services through completion of Medical Terminology class
National certification must be completed within 2 years of hire either through CCHI or the National Board, and certification must be maintained.
Qualifications
Medical Spanish Interpreter: Requires a minimum of two (2) years interpreter experience, preferably in a medical setting. In-house contractors may qualify after full rotation has been completed, generally around 12 months.
Interpreter I: requires dual language proficiency English/Spanish with ability to break linguistic and cultural barriers between patients and medical staff. Ability to shift from one language to another in simultaneous and consecutive mode of interpreting.
Medical Interpreting Training/education And/or Work Experience Is Required.

This is a part-time (FTE .5, benefits eligible) role.
Schedule will be Monday - Fridays 12:30pm to 5:00 pm. No weekends or holidays.
This opening is will primarily cover the Children's Wisconsin Kenosha clinic location: 6809 122nd Avenue, Kenosha, WI 53142 and will also support the Lakeside Pediatrics clinic and the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) in Mount Pleasant.
