About the Role

The Judicial Department works to provide equal access to justice, contribute to public safety, and strengthen the rule of law across Colorado. This role directs the work of language interpreters and provides accurate interpretation services between English and the target (foreign) language for the courts and probation departments. Employees in this class are pursuing certification through the Colorado Judicial Department’s Court Interpreter Certification Program and may remain in this role for up to two years while actively pursuing certification.

This classification is used only when no certified interpreter in good standing lives within a 40-mile radius of the office and demonstrates interest in the Managing Court Interpreter vacancy. Positions may require occasional travel and may serve multiple judicial districts.

Responsibilities

  • Arranges interpreter coverage for all hearings, proceedings, or conferences needing interpretation services.
  • Assigns and schedules work of staff interpreters or freelance interpreters, maintaining lists of freelance interpreters for all linguistic needs.
  • Participates in recruiting, selecting, evaluating, and terminating interpreters.
  • Provides high-quality interpretation, utilizing the three modes of interpretation (simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation) in accordance with accepted standards.
  • Fills in for interpreters as needed and may facilitate telephonic interpretation services.
  • Serves as a liaison for internal and external communications regarding interpreter office activities and operations.
  • May perform limited translation services or proofread translations if ATA-certified.
  • Provides guidance on statewide and local policies, professional standards, and educational requirements for interpreters.
  • Assists in evaluating ethical concerns consistent with professional interpreter ethics.
  • Provides interpreters with necessary resources, including equipment, reference materials, and case-related documents.
  • May travel to courts in other jurisdictions to provide interpreter services.
  • Maintains data on interpretation contacts for statistical purposes and performs related clerical duties.
  • Serves on interpreter committees, attends meetings and training, and networks with other Interpreter Schedulers and Managing Court Interpreters.
  • Directly supervises interpreters, including freelance or contract interpreters, in accordance with interpreter guidelines and Judicial Branch policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be fluently bilingual, possessing a college-level vocabulary in both English and the target language, with the ability to communicate complex information.
  • Must be in good standing with the Colorado Judicial Department’s Court Interpreter Certification Program and actively pursuing certification.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and four years of paid professional interpreting experience with non-English speaking persons, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in linguistics, cultural issues, public or court administration, or a related field, and three years of interpreting experience in judicial, law enforcement, legal, or related fields.

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in interpretation or translation.
  • Accreditation by the American Translators Association (ATA).

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to walk, stand, sit, reach, and perform repetitive motions with hands and fingers.
  • Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 20 pounds.
  • Must speak audibly, hear, and stand or sit for extended periods, often under demanding or noisy circumstances.
  • Ability to adjust to differing voices, tones, accents, and speed of speech.
  • Requires close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and high or precarious places.
  • Frequently handles emergency or crisis situations, interruptions, and multiple inquiries.
  • Moderate noise level; may use interpreting equipment such as simultaneous audio devices, telephones, or computers.
  • Frequent workday and overnight travel may be required.
