About the role

Prisma is actively seeking experienced onsite interpreters to join our team of independent contractors. In this role, you will provide simultaneous and/or consecutive onsite interpretation (OSI) services to Prisma clients in the state of California. Video Remote (VRI) appointments may also be available.

In-demand languages: Spanish, plus Chinese (Cantonese), Korean, Punjabi, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the following specialized topics: Water board meetings/hearings, environmental and public health management, water conservation, regulatory and resource funding.

Requirements

Minimum requirements – applicants must meet ALL of the following:

• Preferred candidates will be court-certified in California or with US Federal Courts. If you are not court-certified, you must have at least two years of onsite (in-person) experience interpreting in legal/courts settings and/or for state/federal government offices. Your resume must outline your relevant experience.
• Trained and/or tested by recognized interpretation skills assessment organizations and/or higher education institutions.
• Three references who can confirm your status as a professional onsite interpreter.
• Full fluency in English and the other language.
• Minimum age: 18+ years or older.
• Minimum education: High School Diploma.

Responsibilities

• Provide simultaneous and consecutive onsite & video remote interpretation for non-English speakers and state government representatives.
• Effectively review and understand all necessary background documents prior to assignments.
• Demonstrate strong experience using virtual interpretation tools (e.g., Zoom).
• Use tabletop sound booths, interpreter control units, FM transmitters, and headset/receivers.
• Maintain polite forms of expression, enunciation, and a high level of customer service.
• Accurately convey concepts and meanings between the speaker and Limited English Proficient (LEP) speakers.
• Ensure correct grammar, clarity, and tone between English and the other language.
• Follow the speaker’s direction, professionally interject when clarification is needed, and manage the flow of conversation.
• Refrain from side conversations with the LEP and entering into any disagreement with the customer or LEP.
• Maintain a professional appearance, polite demeanor, and punctuality.
• Comply with applicable ethics and standards.
