About the Role

A Spoken Language Interpreter facilitates communication of spoken messages between limited English proficiency (LEP) patients and visitors and Lexington Medical Center (LMC) staff and providers. The interpreter combines linguistic and cultural mediation skills while adhering to professional interpreting standards. They provide sight-translation of medical materials to enhance patient comprehension of procedures, treatments, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.

Responsibilities

• Provide accurate interpretation services for patients, family members, visitors, LEP employees, and care providers, ensuring clarity of medical, business, and general terminology.
• Follow guidelines established by the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare (NCIHC).
• Perform sight-translation of pertinent materials for patients and families when needed and appropriate.
• Serve as a cultural mediator to enhance communication between staff and patients or family members.
• Monitor and maintain language proficiency, staying updated on linguistic meanings and regional variances in both languages.
• Participate in continuing education to maintain certification.
• Manage and respond to interpretation requests through ServiceHub.
• Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and adaptability in high-pressure or emotionally intense scenarios.
• Travel to other LMC facilities as required.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum Experience: 1 year as a medical interpreter.
• Certification: Nationally certified at hire or must obtain certification within the first year of employment (CCHI certification required for Spoken Language Interpreters).
• Training: Completion of Bridging the Gap Medical Interpreter training or equivalent upon hire.

Schedule

Full-time, rotating schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–5:00 PM.
