Interpreter (ASL) - Deaf and Hard of Hearing (District Wide)

2026-27 School Year – 171 days/year, 7.5 hours/day

About the Role

The Interpreter position provides support to the instructional program by assisting in the instruction or supervision of hearing-impaired students. Responsibilities include voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice interpretation, serving as a resource for school personnel, and ensuring effective communication for individuals with hearing impairment.

Responsibilities

• Adapts classroom work under the direction of the teacher to support and reinforce lesson plans for assigned students.
• Administers subject-specific tests and skill assessments under the guidance of a classroom or resource teacher to evaluate students' language ability and subject proficiency.
• Assesses classroom, assembly hall, and other room setups (e.g., noise level, visibility) to ensure proper conditions for hearing-impaired students' learning.
• Attends Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings to provide input on students' progress and assist in implementing/modifying objectives through ASL interpretation.
• Confers with teachers, parents, and community agency personnel to evaluate student progress and implement student objectives.
• Interprets in meetings and activities for hearing-impaired individuals, facilitating communication between voice and sign language.
• Maintains confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic records to document activities and provide reliable information.
• Monitors student activities (e.g., classroom, lunch, grounds) to ensure safety and welfare.
• Participates in meetings, workshops, and committees to stay informed about program guidelines and convey relevant information.
• Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the work unit.
• Prepares documents, reports, and written materials to communicate information to parents and staff, provide support, and convey recommendations.
• Provides instruction to hearing-impaired students under teacher supervision, following lesson plans (e.g., reading, spelling, self-esteem, behavioral skills, daily living skills).
• Provides ASL interpretation for group meetings to ensure content understanding for hearing-impaired participants.
• Provides input to teachers to assist in evaluating student progress and objectives.
• Responds to emergency situations (e.g., injured students, fights) to resolve immediate safety concerns or direct to appropriate personnel.
• Reverse-interprets spoken words of hearing-impaired students with limited speech to facilitate classroom instruction.
• Translates verbal communication to assist students, teachers, and parents in effective communication between voice and sign language.

Requirements

• Skill in operating instructional media machines and specialized equipment for the hearing impaired, standard office equipment, and relevant software applications.
• Knowledge of student behavior management strategies/techniques and ASL or other manual communication languages.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Missouri Commission on Deaf and Hard of Hearing Certification.
• 12 hours or 1.2 CEU of continuing education/training required to maintain Missouri Certification.
• Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
