Internal Medicine Physician

A critical role providing comprehensive care for hospitalized medical patients in Fargo, ND. This position requires a dedicated professional capable of delivering high-quality medical care in a fast-paced environment on a 1-year contract with a 7 AM–7 PM schedule.

Responsibilities

• Admit and coordinate all aspects of care for hospitalized medical patients, including:
  • Admission assessments and appropriate hospital placement
  • Evaluation and treatment
  • Ordering and interpretation of diagnostic studies
  • Medication administration
  • End-of-life discussions
  • Consultations with specialists
  • Discharge planning and coordination with primary care physicians
• Provide care to patients in critical/acute care settings in accordance with VA policies, including:
  • Assessing, stabilizing, and determining disposition of inpatients with emergent conditions
  • Running code teams and rapid response teams
• Perform a variety of procedures within the scope of hospitalist medicine, such as:
  • Integumentary, local anesthetic, eye, ear, nose, and musculoskeletal procedures
  • Cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary/women’s health procedures
  • Resuscitation procedures, lumbar punctures, and others as necessary
• Review all inpatient admissions recommended by Mid-level (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) providers
• Ensure person-to-person hand-offs/handovers for every admission
• Provide consultation and instruction to referring physicians regarding appropriate indications for procedures
• Determine the appropriate course of treatment and communicate with referring clinicians
• Initiate social work referrals for identified homeless veterans and patients without primary care providers
• Follow all established medication policies and procedures; ensure no sample medications are provided to patients
• Provide discharge education and follow-up instructions coordinated with the next care setting

Requirements

• Medical degree from an accredited medical school
• Board certification in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
• Active, full, current, and unrestricted license in any U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
• Ability to obtain and maintain appropriate hospital credentials
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong clinical acumen and ability to make sound medical judgments in emergency situations
• Commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care to veterans
