About the role

The Intern will gain hands-on experience evaluating processes, reviewing policies, and assessing compliance with established regulations and procedures. They will work alongside experienced professionals to conduct audits, analyze operational practices, and identify opportunities for improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting audits with audit teams
  • Reviewing policies for changes
  • Aiding Audit manager and Audit Director with special projects
  • Aiding with ensuring divisions are in compliance with state, federal and local government policies relating to safeguarding departmental assets
  • Aiding with ensuring fraud, waste and abuse is not occurring in the agency

Requirements

This posting is for a part-time Summer Intern with the Internal Audit Section of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (DPS). This Internship is expected to start on August 24, 2026, ending on October 23, 2026. The work schedule is HYBRID part time, up to 30 hours per week. The rate of pay is $15.00 per hour.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience: Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. This internship is for applicants currently pursuing (or recent graduate with) a degree in Accounting, Auditing, and/or Business Administration or related field with accounting coursework. Please attach an unofficial transcript and letter of recommendation from a professional reference or college advisor/professor.

Skills

Knowledge Skills And Abilities/Management Preferences: DPS uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals. The Minimum Education and Experience (E&E) is REQUIRED to qualify for this position. Management Preferences, including Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs), are not required but may be used to determine the pool of most qualified applicants. Managers may also choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences. All work history and education (including accurate dates of employment/attendance) must be documented on the application.

Benefits

Interns will be hired through Temporary Solutions which operates as the State’s temporary employment agency. As a temporary position there are no leave or retirement benefits offered with this position.

Pay

The rate of pay is $15.00 per hour.

Schedule

The work schedule is HYBRID part time, up to 30 hours per week.
