Intern Therapist (Masters Students)

Therapy Internship opportunity available for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027.

About the role

Under supervisory direction, assesses, diagnoses, counsels, and provides psychotherapeutic treatment, rehabilitation, and care coordination for behaviorally and emotionally disturbed children and adolescents as it is medically necessary. Provides educational and consultation services to other staff and school personnel.

Responsibilities

• Interviews potential clients to assess the need for direct mental health treatment of mental and emotional disorders or referral elsewhere.
• Provides comprehensive medically necessary and psychotherapeutic services for individuals or members of a family to assist them in achieving productive social adjustments, reducing the impact of disabling disorders, and facilitating their achievement of living, vocational, recreational, and interpersonal goals through individual, family, group counseling, and collateral/significant other contacts.
• Diagnostically assesses, formulates, and completes the client’s Treatment Plan inclusive of diagnosis, goals, and appropriate signatures within 30 days or the first 2 sessions from initial client contact, whichever is shorter. All Treatment Plan updates must be completed within the OhioMHAS rule timeframe.
• Completes and submits into the clients ICR all professional documentation no later than 48 hours from all client contact. Compensation is conditional upon the timely completion of all professional documentation as stated in Agency Policy and Procedures.
• Shares and receives appropriate information with teachers, guidance counselors, and administrative staff to assist in a collaborative effort with clients in the assigned buildings. Release of information forms must be signed by the parent/guardian prior to exchanging confidential information.
• Educates clients and their families regarding their diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and therapeutic process.
• If assigned to a school setting, works cooperatively with teachers, guidance counselors, and administrative staff within their assigned buildings, including relaying appropriate information, assessing needs of additional staff, and coordinating services.
• Identifies, recommends, networks, and/or utilizes community resources to facilitate the highest possible mental health functioning of all assigned clients. Involvement in home visits may be necessary to assure continuity of clinical care.
• Adheres to the agency’s personnel policies and procedures, OhioMHAS, COA, Medicaid and Insurance standards, and fulfills documentation and reporting requirements. Submits completed clinical documents into the Electronic Health Record for processing into the Individualized Client Records.
• Participates in quality assurance and program evaluation studies.
• Attends and participates in scheduled or required training, staff meetings, peer review, workshops, and supervision.
• Maintains at least the current or minimum required Ohio licensure status as a qualified OhioMHAS service provider. All CEU certificates obtained during employment must be copied for entry into their personnel file.

Requirements

• Candidates must be in an active Masters program in Social Work, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Marriage & Family Therapy, or Education, and in good academic standing.
• Candidates must acquire an active license through the State of Ohio to perform services eligible for the internship (SWT, CT, MFTT).
• Demonstrated experience in the treatment of children, adolescents, adults, and families individually and in group modality.
• Ability to reasonably problem-solve complex and possible crisis mental health client problems.
• Ability to develop and write clear, concise documents involving client outcome reporting requirements.
• Effective time management and interviewing skills.
• Acceptance and dedication toward the Mission of Red Oak Behavioral Health.
• Possession of a valid Ohio driver’s license.

Skills & Abilities

• Working knowledge of assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, counseling, and psychotherapeutic treatment of marriage, family, and child relationship dysfunctions.
• Methods of developing and implementing a treatment plan.
• Current trends in the field of mental health; laws and regulations applicable to mental health.
• Ability to perform effective counseling and psychotherapy with individuals, families, and groups.
• Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with clients’ families, members of other professional disciplines, social agencies, and co-workers.
• Ability to relate professionally with persons with mental disorders.
• Ability to identify and utilize community resources.
• Ability to advise and train other mental health staff.
• Ability to prepare and present clear and concise oral and written reports.

Unique Requirements

• Due to the clinical focus of this position, the employee must maintain a minimum of $1,000,000.00 / $3,000,000.00 professional malpractice liability insurance. A copy of the current rider must be available for entry into their personnel file.
