Intern - Microelectronics Architecture/Hardware Energy Efficiency
About the role
The summer internship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in estimating energy usage in computing systems, focusing on both published data and research systems. The internship is part of a DOE initiative aimed at improving energy efficiency in computing.
Responsibilities
- Identify different hardware architectures and systems, including those used in machine learning and scientific computing.
- Outline the nature and quantity of data required for each hardware system, collaborating with the mentor.
- Conduct data analysis to ensure the quality and reliability of the data.
- Develop models for estimating energy efficiencies, working closely with the mentor.
- Carry out verification, validation, and critical analysis of estimates.
- Refine and develop models to integrate scientific knowledge into the model formulation and training phases.
- Prepare reports and scientific publications outlining the advancements under the mentor’s guidance.
Requirements
- Pursuing a Master's or Doctoral degree in a science, engineering, or equivalent discipline.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Passionate about innovative solutions for science and engineering problems.
- Some prior experience with Python programming is beneficial.
Qualifications
- At least 18 years old.
- Currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated.
- Eligible for US work authorization.
Skills
- Knowledge of computing architecture, memory, interconnects, and hardware.
- Experience with Python programming.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Pay
The expected pay range for this position is $31.02 - $39.26 per hour.
Schedule
The internship runs for 8 weeks, starting between May and mid-August, with the start date contingent on the candidate's convenience.
