Intern - GN&C Fall Intern
Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) team is seeking an undergraduate or graduate student fall intern with academic or work experience in controls, 6 DOF modeling, simulation, and tool development. This position supports the Human Lander System Program (HLSP) to ensure safety and mission success in sending humans back to the Moon.
Responsibilities
- Develop, modify, and maintain software simulations, tools, and scripts
- Create, edit, and debug software written in MATLAB, Simulink, and/or Simscape Multibody
- Model, simulate, and analyze launch vehicle and/or spacecraft dynamics and performance
- Analyze systems in the time and frequency domain
- Work with GN&C leads and other engineering disciplines
- Support verification and validation of technical products
- Prepare and present technical reports and/or briefings
- Create and review engineering and software documentation
Requirements
- Current enrollment in an engineering, science, technical, math, computer science, or related BS or MS degree program (ABET accredited institution preferred)
- Valid Star ID/Real ID driver’s license, access to an automobile, and ability to drive to work locations
- Programming in MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape Multibody, and/or C/C++
- Experience preparing, presenting, and reviewing technical reports and briefings including analysis and software documentation
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently and collaboratively
- Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
- Completed sophomore year of university studies and in good academic standing with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
Qualifications
- Academic or work experience modeling, simulating, and analyzing the performance of aerospace vehicles in the time domain
- Experience improving analysis tools and/or controls models
- Academic work, experience, or demonstrated interest in control systems design/analysis
- Analyzing systems for stability margin in the frequency domain (Nichols, Bode, Nyquist, Root Locus)
- Deriving state equations related to spacecraft and launch vehicle systems
- Design and development of flight control systems including PID control gain design, state estimation, adaptive control, neural networks, or other advanced control methods
- Conducting controls-related trade, parametric, and failure analysis studies
- Implementing machine learning algorithms for controls, modeling, system identification, or other aerospace applications
- Developing GUIs in MATLAB
- Programming in Python
- Familiarity with conducting unit tests and analyses for simulation/software development, verification, and validation
- Creating visualizations in 3D tools such as Terragen, STK, or Unreal Engine

Physical Requirements
- Sitting for extended periods in meetings (10%) and at a desk for engineering tasks (80%)

Equipment and Machines

Schedule
- Normal workday: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday
- Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and support technical demands
Other Essential Functions
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and make rational decisions (100%)
- Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and not impose a safety risk
- Proof of U.S. citizenship is required
Pay
This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In addition to your base hourly rate, you may receive an additional health and welfare payment per hour worked to comply with SCA minimums. The exact amount depends on the fringe benefits selected.
