Intern/Co-op - Accounting (Summer 2027)
About the role
As an intern at MPC, you will receive on-the-job training related to the dynamics of the petroleum industry, the specifics of your job assignment, and the use of various software programs. The Controller's Organization is committed to developing accountants by providing experience in as many areas of the business as practical. Accountants that demonstrate exceptional proficiency are eligible for opportunities within other areas of the Company, where analytical skills are highly valued.
Placement Areas
- Audit Assurance & Advisory Services (Findlay and San Antonio* – All Terms) – Accounting major preferred, but other business majors may be considered
- General Accounting (Findlay – All Terms)
- Joint Venture Accounting/Operations Accounting (Denver – All Terms)
- Operations Accounting (Findlay & San Antonio – All Terms)
- Property Accounting (Findlay – All Terms)
- Tax Accounting (Findlay – All Terms)
Responsibilities
- Analyzing and processing of business documents
- Analysis of accounting and financial data to prepare proper financial statement journal entries
- Preparation of general ledger account reconcilements
- Preparation of tax information
- Testing SOX and Non-SOX controls in auditing
- Assistance in preparing budgets
- Interface with a variety of departments outside of the Controller's Organization to develop collaborative relationships
As you progress in your career with Marathon, responsibilities will expand to include more complex accounting and analysis activities, presentation of new ideas in formal meetings, enhancement of existing accounting processes, development of new processes for efficiency, mentoring less experienced accountants, and leading as an analyst in an accounting section. Opportunities for career growth include transfers to operational components such as Refining, Commercial, Logistics & Storage, Pipeline and Gathering & Processing, as well as roles in Tax, Internal Audit, Finance & Treasury, Business Development, and Supply Chain.
Qualifications
- Required Major: Accounting
- Strong academic performance
- Authorization to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without employment visa sponsorship now or in the future
- Available for spring, summer, and fall semesters
- Concurrent enrollment in a bachelor's degree (or higher) seeking program for the duration of the experience
- Ability to provide reliable transportation to and from place of work
- Military experience a plus
- Availability to work 40 hours per week
Pay
$20.19 – $25.24 per hour
