Intermediate Substation Designer

WSP is seeking an Intermediate Substation Designer for our Hallowell, ME office. Remote work may be available for candidates residing in the northeast region.

About the Role

Be involved in projects with our Power & Energy Substation Team and contribute to a growing organization that meets clients' objectives and solves their challenges. This role provides local technical design and CADD support for planning, transportation, infrastructure, and technical services projects, focusing on electric utility transmission and distribution substation projects. Responsibilities may include physical substation design and/or protection & control (P&C) design support.

Responsibilities

• Generate CADD designs for assigned aspects of projects of basic to moderate scale and/or complexity.
• Produce accurate and concise design phase deliverables, including reports, technical memoranda, design manuals, plans, profiles, models, sections, details, specifications, and material lists for substation design packages (e.g., general arrangement drawings, equipment layouts, conduit/cable/trench layouts, wiring diagrams, schematics, and bill of materials).
• Ensure responsibilities are delivered with quality that meets or exceeds industry standards for design, accuracy, and functionality.
• Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, schematics, and other technical documents to support drafting and design activities.
• Use 3D computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software under minimal supervision to resolve design details or discrepancies, preparing high-precision drawings for projects of basic complexity.
• Provide technical design assistance, ensuring proper illustration, fit, form, and function using geometric dimensioning, tolerance, and quantity calculations while adhering to design standards and utility/substation requirements.
• Verify calculations, design change orders, and interpret contract plans and specifications; escalate discrepancies or technical problems for resolution.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to execute project work.
• Ensure plans adhere to city, state, and federal regulations, as well as utility/substation design standards.
• Prepare multiple design versions for engineer review.
• Specify dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
• Work collaboratively with engineers and other technical professionals on project phases, checks, and tasks.
• Complete assigned training tasks.
• Demonstrate knowledge of current drafting and design support practices related to substation design packages (physical and/or P&C).
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

• High School Diploma.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant post-education experience in drafting and design support, including experience with electric utility substation projects involving physical substation design and/or protection & control (P&C).
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
• Highly familiar with drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
• Knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with technical and non-technical audiences.
• Self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment.
• Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instructions, and comply with company policies.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
• Analytical mindset with sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
• Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge and reach conclusions from data analysis.

• Flexibility to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek based on project requirements.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree in a closely related discipline.
• Experience using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, and/or MicroStation to produce or support substation physical and/or P&C drawing packages.

Pay

Expected salary range: $55,600 - $76,340, based on education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and geographic location.
