Intermediate Professional, Geotechnical Engineering
About the Role
This opportunity provides geotechnical engineering support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers for remediation, permitting, improvement, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector. Tasks include basic assistance with research, design, analysis, concept development, and construction of roads, buildings, tunnels, dams, canals, levees, bridges, water supply systems, underground storage, and sewage treatment. You will generate accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding assigned material, installations, and construction specifications, ensuring responsibilities are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
Responsibilities
- With minimal supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, soil/water/sludge/rock samples, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
- Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements and statistical analysis of rock and soil environmental data.
- Perform basic professional geotechnical engineering work, including research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, subsurface investigations, soil foundation engineering, settlement analysis, soil erosion, lateral earth pressures, geological hazards, underground water, and slope stability for commercial, industrial, building, environmental, infrastructure, and transportation projects.
- Assist with the development of technologies, monitoring devices, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality for end-users, transportation systems, structures, and future-ready geotechnical engineering solutions.
- Assist with verifying site characteristics and provide technical assistance on environmental, design, and construction issues involving rock and soil mechanics, including investigating subsurface and geological conditions for foundation, earth structure, and pavement sub-grade design.
- Write technical reports summarizing research findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using sketches, calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, and software.
- Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis on design concepts, construction, mitigation, improvement activities, and remediation projects.
- Work with cross-functional teams to execute project work and assist with work plan preparation and coordination of field/site work and permitting.
- Collaborate with engineers and planners on projects involving infrastructure authorities for Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- 1 to 3 years of relevant post-education experience.
- Knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, practices, processes, design/build, and their application to permitting and project work-related issues.
- Familiarity with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including rehabilitation and new design.
- Highly familiar with remediation, permitting, improvement, and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with others and expressing ideas effectively to both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
- Self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Experience with discipline-specific design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STAAD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Engineer in Training Certification.
- Prior design experience.
- Active membership and/or participation in local professional practice organizations.

Pay
Expected salary range: $58,200 - $96,030. WSP USA provides this range based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and geographic location. The company reserves the right to adjust compensation and benefits based on circumstances unrelated to an applicant’s protected status.
