About the role

Johns Hopkins University seeks an Interior Planner to join the Planning & Architecture (P&A) team. The P&A team supports long-range planning, capital strategy, new construction, renovation, and space utilization initiatives for all non-clinical space across the Homewood, East Baltimore, Peabody, and DC campuses, as well as the university’s leased properties. The Interior Planner will conduct space use analysis, programming, conceptual planning, and other evaluations, providing guidance for interior design issues during the project phases.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct technical analyses of existing building architectural systems to inform recommendations regarding design, functionality, and performance.
  • Engage outside consultants for testing, planning or design studies, subject matter expertise, and engineering support.
  • Participate in on-site space audits to create and validate databases by observing campus conditions.
  • Prepare responses to data requests from other university units and consultants.
  • Develop architectural space programs based on input from user groups.
  • Conduct test fits to evaluate layout options.
  • Oversee, review, and evaluate Capital Project designs in support of the university’s standards, guidelines, policies, and campus development plans.
  • Provide technical direction and guidance.
  • Work with University stakeholders, JHFRE staff, and external consultants or experts as required to develop and document design standards for renovation and new construction.
  • Interface with JHFRE/Plant Operations personnel in recommending the most appropriate design solutions, addressing durability, financial sustainability, and appropriateness.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership, divisional representatives, JHFRE/Plant Operations, and consultants to guide and oversee the development and implementation of campus-based planning initiatives.
  • Champion progress on the university's sustainability initiatives.
  • Participate in other planning and design-related tasks and initiatives of strategic importance to the university, as well as related data gathering and analysis, research, presentation preparation, facility surveys, and other ad hoc efforts as assigned.
  • Prepare information to enable decision-making by JHFRE leadership, senior leadership, and trustees.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Professional Architect license in the State of Maryland or a state with reciprocity preferred.
  • LEED Accreditation is preferred.
  • Six years of experience in architectural and/or interior planning and design work; familiarity with construction and renovation of a broad variety of building types.
  • Experience with MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Bluebeam and AutoCAD required.
  • Experience with Revit, SketchUp and/or other graphics programs preferred.
  • Experience with CAFM programs (specifically Archibus) and GIS software is preferred; training will be made available for candidates who do not have past experience in these areas.
