About the Role

Collins Aerospace is seeking a Senior Integration and System Test Engineer to join the GLOBALink Engineering team, which delivers products and services for a large data link communication system used by commercial aviation worldwide. The ideal candidate will have 3 to 6 years of experience as an individual technical contributor and project team member, including experience as a technical lead. The role involves integration and system test duties, as well as well-rounded systems engineering responsibilities.

The GLOBALink Engineering team develops, integrates, and tests software and hardware solutions for real-time, high-availability, 24×7 data link messaging services supporting commercial carriers’ business operations. The focus is on in-house developed software, COTS software applications, database applications, storage server applications, and custom internetworking. Subsystem upgrades are delivered to the Operations Center, which is staffed 24/7 for managing and monitoring the system. On-call support is provided to the Operations Team by the Engineering organization.

Responsibilities

  • Build out the test environment, write test plans, and conduct integration and system testing.
  • Coordinate with other technical teams to resolve issues and lead a test team through a test phase.
  • Work on medium to large-scale systems with multiple interfaces, including interoperability testing with external customers (desired but not required).
  • Solicit customer or business needs, write technical requirements, and develop system designs to meet those needs.
  • Decompose technical requirements into test cases and conduct system test and/or factory acceptance testing.
  • Plan and execute deployment activities with the customer (desired but not required).
  • Perform integration and system testing in the laboratory environment, including:
    • Functional testing of enhancements and operational defect corrections.
    • End-to-end testing, security testing, and failure scenario testing for redundant subsystems.
    • Soak and stress testing, as well as deployment rehearsals to validate procedures and documentation.
  • Develop test procedures for technical requirements, system/software design, and operational scenarios not identified by other teams.
  • Collaborate with system engineers, software developers, network engineers, and other test engineers throughout the project lifecycle, including:
    • Participating in system requirements reviews, software design reviews, and test plan reviews.
    • Providing technical support during integration and testing in the laboratory.
    • Reviewing test reports with technical teams and external stakeholders.
  • Set up test environments and write comprehensive Integration and System Test Plans from scratch for new or enhanced functionality.
  • Conduct integration and system testing to verify technical requirements, resolve operational defects, and validate user documentation and deployment procedures.
  • Provide on-call support to the Operations Team.

Requirements

  • 3 to 6 years of experience working within an engineering organization as an individual technical contributor and project team member.
  • Experience as a technical lead on a project team.
  • Experience with integration and system testing, preferably on medium to large-scale systems with multiple interfaces.
  • Experience in systems engineering, including soliciting customer needs, writing technical requirements, and developing system designs.
  • Ability to decompose technical requirements into test cases and conduct system testing.
  • Familiarity with manual system testing using test tools for messaging, logging, and storage.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as critical thinking skills.
  • Engineering degree required.
  • Experience in Systems Engineering, requirements-based Integration & System Test Engineering (not QA/QC), Software Development, or Design Engineering on medium to large systems/projects.
  • Willingness to work onsite within 30 miles of Annapolis, MD, for daily assigned duties.

The Engineering organization is a certified CMMI Level 3 organization that follows a rigorous set of defined processes throughout the Waterfall Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).

Skills

  • Intelligent, hardworking, and self-starting with a growth mindset.
  • Eager to learn, enthusiastic, focused, and adaptable.
  • Dependable, flexible, and passionate about the opportunity.
  • Strong technical, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Experience with Linux-based servers, VHF radios, internetworking devices, WAN transport networks, and IBM MQ customer networks is a plus.

Test Environment

The test environment is a large, complex aviation end-to-end data communications system located in a single laboratory. It includes:

  • Dozens of Linux-based servers.
  • VHF radios and several internetworking devices.
  • Interfaces to a WAN transport network and an IBM MQ customer network.
  • A variety of test tools for data traffic generation and performance monitoring.

Note: This is not a web-based application system but one with roots dating back to the late 1970s for aviation data link services.

Career Development

Opportunities for career development through transfer to other GLOBALink development and system engineering teams are offered and encouraged. A transition to another team may begin after working in the Integration and System Test team for 2 to 3 years. Career growth and advancement are supported by all leaders at Collins.
