About the role
The X-Theoretical Design Division (XTD) is seeking an R&D Manager 4 to lead the Integrated Design and Assessment (XTD-IDA) group. The Group Leader will manage, direct, and ensure the technical quality and delivery of the group’s products. XTD-IDA focuses on improving predictive understanding of nuclear weapon physics, design, performance, and certification, and integrates various theoretical, experimental, and modeling activities.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategies for the group’s scientific direction and product delivery.
- Maintain and develop relationships with stakeholders both inside and outside the Laboratory.
- Mentor and develop personnel within the group.
- Provide technical expertise in nuclear weapon physics and design.
- Pursue high-energy-density physics experiments and simulations.
- Apply technical capabilities to enhance the entire XTD portfolio.
Requirements
- Demonstrated effective leadership, including strategy development, program development, institutional partnerships, creativity, innovation, decisiveness, integrity, and institutional perspective.
- Experience and evidence of excellent performance in scientific or technical leadership roles.
- Experience mentoring, recruiting, career development, and providing constructive feedback.
- Experience and evidence of technical expertise in nuclear weapon physics and design.
- Demonstrated commitment to high-energy-density physics experiments and simulations.
- Knowledge of LANL line/program interactions and roles & responsibilities, and the nuclear weapons physics applications community.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- PhD in science or engineering in a specialization relevant to XTD-IDA is strongly preferred.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in direct stockpile-related programs.
- Experience in nuclear physics, particle physics, neutral or charged-particle transport, fluid dynamics, shock physics, high explosives, equations of state, material science, plasma physics, or another closely related discipline.
- Experience with large-scale simulation of complex physical processes.
- Experience in designing, analyzing, coordinating, and/or conducting experimental activities.
- Knowledge of LANL line/program interactions and roles & responsibilities, and the nuclear weapons physics applications community.
- Knowledge and familiarity with NNSA NA-10 and its interactions with the LANL Weapons Program.
