Insurance Examiner-In-Charge

About the role

As an Examiner-in-Charge (EIC) for the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation, Captive Insurance Division, you will lead examinations and provide ongoing oversight of Vermont-domiciled captive insurance companies. Using a risk-focused approach, you will guide a team of examiners in evaluating key areas of captive insurance company operations and business practices, including corporate governance, strategy, business plan, IT systems, internal controls, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance. Additional responsibilities include conducting research, managing special projects, and performing annual and quarterly surveillance for a portfolio of companies.

This role requires self-motivation and strong skills in time management, organization, critical thinking, and communication.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of examiners in risk-focused evaluations of captive insurance companies.
• Assess corporate governance, strategy, business plans, IT systems, internal controls, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance.
• Conduct research and manage special projects.
• Perform annual and quarterly surveillance for a portfolio of companies.

Requirements

• Graduate degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field and two (2) or more years of experience at or above a technical level in accounting, auditing, or financial examination, including two (2) or more years involving insurance operations and supervisory responsibilities.
• OR Bachelor's degree and four (4) or more years of experience at or above a technical level in accounting, auditing, or financial examination, including two (2) or more years involving insurance operations and supervisory responsibilities.
• OR One year as an Insurance Examiner III.

Preferred Qualifications

• AFE (Accredited Financial Examiner), CFE (Certified Financial Examiner), or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) designations.

Special Requirements

Employees involved with financial examinations will be required to obtain the CFE designation within 48 months of employment.

Environmental Factors

• Work is performed primarily in a normal office setting and/or remotely.
• May require travel to insurer offices in or outside of the State of Vermont.
• Work hours may vary according to examination and workload needs.
