About the role
The Nebraska Department of Insurance seeks a Financial Examiner to join our Financial Examination team. This role is responsible for regulating one of the largest domestic insurance industries in the United States, ensuring financial solvency through ongoing monitoring, analysis, and on-site examinations of insurance companies.
Our mission is to safeguard consumers by promoting the fair and just treatment of all parties in insurance transactions. The department works with national and international regulators and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to fulfill its responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Conduct on-site examinations at insurance companies to verify financial and non-financial information, working both independently and as part of a team.
- Investigate insurance company activities to determine compliance with insurance industry accounting standards (Statements of Statutory Accounting Practices - SSAP).
- Analyze insurance company policies, procedures, operations, and controls to detect regulatory statute violations and solvency concerns.
- Review and verify accounting transactions, including journal entries, ledgers, trial balances, and supporting documentation.
- Assist in verifying and reviewing data supporting assets, net worth, liabilities, capital stock, surplus, income, and expenditures.
- Correspond with and interview insurance company officials to evaluate compliance and understand operations.
- Assess whether insurance companies adequately meet compliance standards and prepare accurate, organized workpapers.
- Identify and evaluate internal controls, including Sarbanes-Oxley requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a business-related field (e.g., accounting, economics, finance, risk management) with at least 15 accounting hours, including auditing, and at least three hours of Business Law.
- Accounting/auditing work experience is beneficial.
- In-state and out-of-state travel is required, including trips of up to 5 business days at a time. A significant amount of work is performed in the Omaha area.
- Valid driver’s license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
- Regular and reliable attendance.

Pay
Starting Hiring Rate: $30.720 per hour.
Potential Promotions:
- Examiner II – $79,243 annually.
- Examiner III – $94,581 annually.
