About the role

This role ensures compliance with reliability program requirements for unit instrumentation and low-voltage electrical systems, focusing on long-term strategic reliability and implementing improvements to reduce losses from system failures.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure instrumentation and electrical systems are reliable and performance aligns with site and unit reliability targets.
  • Support the Management of Change (MOC) process, including reliability approval of new or modified instrumentation and electrical system designs and changes to instrument system care plans.
  • Lead reliability investigations for significant instrumentation and electrical system failures, applying the Root Cause Analysis (RCA) process and developing corrective action plans.
  • Participate in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), ISO 9000 audits, and site/corporate audits.
  • Develop action plans to resolve emerging issues as part of the “Bad Actor” Process for instrumentation and electrical systems.
  • Support appropriate Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) classification of losses associated with instrumentation and electrical systems.
  • Collaborate with Operations to prioritize instrument and electrical system repairs impacting reliability.
  • Build strategy around instrument and electrical system training; create and deliver training to develop technical capabilities of the reliability, maintenance, and operations teams.
  • Network with the site Reliability team to share best practices.
  • Identify programs and initiatives to drive reliability improvements for instrumentation and electrical systems.
  • Oversee instrument and electrical care plan development and compliance with Preventive Maintenance (PM) program requirements.
  • Provide technical review of engineering projects; work with OEMs, unit, and project teams on specification and selection of new instrumentation and electrical equipment.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in petrochemical, refining, or related industrial manufacturing supporting maintenance and/or reliability.

Skills

  • Technical Expertise: Strong background in instrumentation and low-voltage electrical systems, including knowledge of DCS, sensors, transmitters, control valves, motor controls, and industrial process measurement/monitoring. Experience with Emerson, Honeywell, Delta V, Triconex, and Woodward products is a plus.
  • Reliability Engineering Knowledge: Skilled in reliability assessments, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM), and predictive maintenance techniques.
  • Instrumentation Experience: Strong history of troubleshooting DP, radars, Coriolis, pH/conductivity.
  • CMMS Programs: Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems.
  • Industry Standards: Familiarity with API, ISA, NFPA, and Safety Instrumented System (SIS) management.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for electrical and instrumentation issues.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication skills for cross-functional teams (operations, maintenance, engineering) and ability to mentor junior engineers/specialists.
  • Safety Commitment: Knowledge of electrical codes, hazards, lockout/tagout procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Continuous Improvement: Proactive in identifying system optimization, cost reduction, and reliability enhancement opportunities; stays updated on technological advancements and industry best practices.
