Job Summary
Perform decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, processing and sterilization of all surgical instrumentation, scopes, patient care equipment requiring sterilization, and supplies.
Accountabilities:
- Demonstrates knowledge and technical skills in decontamination and processing of instruments, scopes, equipment and supplies.
- Decontamination of surgical instrumentation. Patient care equipment and supplies is done according to Policy and Procedure following Manufacturer Recommendations and OSHA, AORN, CDC, and OSHA guidelines.
- Safely operates all decontamination equipment according to Manufacturers instructions.
- Demonstrates knowledge of surgical instrumentation and technical expertise in identification of, care and handling of, and inspection for proper working order.
- Prepares and assembles all instrument trays (OR, L&D, ED & SPD, Etc.) according to count Sheets, making sure the instrument trays are complete or appropriately marked with the missing items.
- Inspects all instrumentation for damage, sharpness and proper working order, making sure that all Instrumentation placed on trays are safe to use.
- Removes all damaged instruments from trays and replaces them with appropriate instrumentation.
- Utilizes proper packaging techniques when preparing instrumentation for processing. Appropriately uses wrappers, peel packs and containerized systems following packaging Policy and Procedure, AAMI and AORN guidelines.
- Demonstrates knowledge and technical skills in operating sterilization equipment.
- Safely operates all sterilization equipment following Manufacturer’s instructions.
- Utilizes proper sterilization techniques when using steam sterilization, ethylene oxide (eto) and sterrad, following Policy and Procedure, AAMI, AORN, and OSHA Guidelines.
- Cleanses all sterilization equipment, following Policy and Procedure.
- Maintains appropriate records for sterilization, biological monitoring and ETO monitoring according to Policy and Procedure, AAMI, AORN and OSHA Guidelines.
- Demonstrates knowledge of Standard Precautions.
- Follows the proper workflow pattern.
- Appropriately handles all contaminated instruments, equipment and supplies.
- Wears appropriate personal protective equipment when performing all decontamination tasks.
- Transports all contaminated items in such a manner as to prevent cross contamination of people and environment.
- Demonstrates positive team relationship and communication skills and contributes to create a cohesive and productive environment.
- Utilizes good interpersonal and communication skills when dealing with patients, nursing staff, Physicians, co-workers and all of our customers.
- Effectively communicates all pertinent information to co-workers.
- Demonstrates initiative in completion of assigned work and effectively works with little or no supervision.
- Cooperates with and assists associates in completion of assigned work when able.
- Follows staffing guidelines.
Qualifications
- H.S Diploma/ GED Required
- One year in a lead or charge role preferred
- Certification from IAHCSMM (CRCST) OR CBSPD (CSPDT) required
