About the role

This position coordinates decontamination and sterile processing of all instrumentation and non-sterile supplies in the operating room setting. The Instrument Technician will work with other Operating Room personnel in a team-focused, effective, and efficient manner to accomplish the responsibilities of the decontamination/sterile processing area.

Responsibilities

  • Select and assemble quality instruments into specified instrument sets.
  • Process instruments, including decontamination, checking sets, wrapping, and sterilization.
  • Coordinate borrowing set(s) if needed based on the OR Surgery Schedule.
  • Recall instrument(s) or instrument set(s) from the OR as necessary.
  • Provide guidance to the OR staff on instrument sets and sterilization techniques.
  • Keep the OR staff updated on instrument status (e.g., receiving from other OR, in the sterilizer, arriving by courier).
  • Respond immediately to emergency situations such as power breaks, recalls, and instruments needed for unscheduled OR cases.
  • Train personnel in instrument duties, decontamination, checking, assembly of sets, wrapping, and sterilization of sets.
  • Update the OR schedule throughout the day.
  • Keep records of sterilization, including Biologicals, DART tests, and implant biologicals.
  • Document when instruments are out for repair and when they return.
  • Mark set(s) accordingly.
  • Maintain communication and cooperative relationships with internal and external customers, including Community Surgery Center employees and Medical Staff, Community Hospitals Indianapolis departments, and Vendors and Manufacturers.
  • Perform continual preventive maintenance care on all instruments.

Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Certification (CRCST or CBSPD) is preferred or required within 1 year of hire.
