College: BRCC Department: Academic & Student Affairs Sub department: Liberal Arts Type of Appointment: Unclassified - Faculty 9 month ENGAGE - CONNECT - TRANSFORM The Speech Communication Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in public speaking, interpersonal communication, and oral communication skills. This role focuses on building students' confidence and competence in verbal and nonverbal communication, critical listening, and audience-centered speech development. The Instructor collaborates with the Liberal Arts department chair and colleagues to design engaging course content, assess student learning outcomes, and integrate instructional technology such as Canvas into classroom delivery. Duties and Responsibilities: I. Teaching Provide learning experiences in accordance with students' needs and abilitiesCreate a learning environment in which all students are treated equitablyMake adequate preparation for the instructional process to ensure that course content is presented in a manner suitable for students with varying learning stylesDirect students not on the official class roster to the Office of Enrollment Management to correct enrollment problems, restricting attendance to officially enrolled studentsMeet all scheduled classes within the appropriate timeframe and provide opportunities for student conferences either online, by phone, or through face-to-face interactionsBe punctual with respect to class meetings and provide instruction for the entire class periodNotify academic program manager/department chair of absences and promptly provide course continuity plansUtilize Canvas or other learning management systems as appropriate and requiredUse instructional and technological resources such as the library, Digital Learning and Academic Support Center (DLASC), and computer technology as appropriateProvide classroom instruction in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and federal harassment policiesAlert the department chair or academic program manager of any instances of academic dishonestyMaintain a minimum of 10 office hours per weekMaintain accurate grade and attendance recordsAssess learning outcomes and utilize results when planning and preparing future coursesAdminister final examinations for students during the scheduled exam periodParticipate in assigning course credit via prior learning assessmentParticipate in the teaching evaluation process II. Student Support and Advising Discuss with counselors and other appropriate personnel any student problems which may require special attentionAdvise students and perform special assigned duties related to the registration and retention of students III. Curriculum Development Develop, assess, and revise curricula in accordance with the policies and procedures upheld by the Faculty Senate Courses and Curricula committee IV. Professional Development Engage in approved professional development activities related to pedagogy, assessment, and academic area of expertise to enhance one's effectiveness in all aspects of teaching and course management V. College Service Participate in recruitment, advising, and registration eventsServe on college-wide committees and actively participate in committee activities throughout the term of service VI. Administrative And Other Responsibilities Adhere to professional standards of conductPromote the College's image in the communityPromote an atmosphere of collegiality within one's department and divisionSubmit syllabi, office hours, grades, attendance, electronic time sheets, and other reports by established deadlinesAttend all departmental, division, and general faculty meetingsCollaborate with departmental and college-wide colleagues in the selection of library resources, software, textbooks, and classroom equipmentAttend college convocations and participate in commencement exercises (attired in appropriate academic regalia)Participate in the annual faculty performance evaluation processParticipate in other duties as assigned Required Education: Master’s degree in speech, speech communication, or communication studies; or master’s degree in any discipline with 18 graduate semester hours in speech, speech communication, and/or communication studies. Required Experience: College level teaching experience Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 1. Strong knowledge of speech communication theory, public speaking, and oral communication pedagogy Ability to teach a range of communication courses (e.g., fundamentals of speech, interpersonal communication, group communication) to students with varying skill levels and learning styles Ability to evaluate and provide constructive feedback on student oral presentations and communication competencies Proficiency with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) and instructional technology Strong interpersonal and classroom management skills Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, staff, and administration Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple courses, deadlines, and reporting requirements Effective written and verbal communication skills Ability to assess student learning outcomes and adjust instructional strategies accordingly Commitment to student success and equitable, inclusive classroom practices Required Licenses Or Certifications Preferred Education: Master’s degree in speech, speech communication, or communication studies; or master’s degree in any discipline with 18 graduate semester hours in speech, speech communication, and/or communication studies. Preferred Experience: Master’s degree in speech, speech communication, or communication studies Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 1.
