About the Role

The Speech Communication Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in public speaking, interpersonal communication, and oral communication skills. This role focuses on building students' confidence and competence in verbal and nonverbal communication, critical listening, and audience-centered speech development. The Instructor collaborates with the Liberal Arts department chair and colleagues to design engaging course content, assess student learning outcomes, and integrate instructional technology such as Canvas into classroom delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching
    • Provide learning experiences in accordance with students' needs and abilities
    • Create a learning environment in which all students are treated equitably
    • Prepare instructional content suitable for students with varying learning styles
    • Direct students not on the official class roster to correct enrollment problems
    • Meet all scheduled classes and provide opportunities for student conferences
    • Be punctual and provide instruction for the entire class period
    • Notify academic program manager/department chair of absences and provide course continuity plans
    • Utilize Canvas or other learning management systems as required
    • Use instructional and technological resources such as the library and Digital Learning and Academic Support Center (DLASC)
    • Provide instruction in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and federal harassment policies
    • Alert the department chair or academic program manager of any instances of academic dishonesty
    • Maintain a minimum of 10 office hours per week
    • Maintain accurate grade and attendance records
    • Assess learning outcomes and utilize results for future course planning
    • Administer final examinations during the scheduled exam period
    • Participate in assigning course credit via prior learning assessment
    • Participate in the teaching evaluation process
  • Student Support and Advising
    • Discuss student problems requiring special attention with counselors and appropriate personnel
    • Advise students and perform duties related to registration and retention
  • Curriculum Development
    • Develop, assess, and revise curricula in accordance with Faculty Senate policies
  • Professional Development
    • Engage in approved professional development activities related to pedagogy, assessment, and academic expertise
  • College Service
    • Participate in recruitment, advising, and registration events
    • Serve on college-wide committees and actively participate in committee activities
  • Administrative and Other Responsibilities
    • Adhere to professional standards of conduct
    • Promote the College's image in the community
    • Foster an atmosphere of collegiality within the department and division
    • Submit syllabi, office hours, grades, attendance, and reports by established deadlines
    • Attend departmental, division, and general faculty meetings
    • Collaborate with colleagues in selecting library resources, software, textbooks, and classroom equipment
    • Attend college convocations and participate in commencement exercises
    • Participate in the annual faculty performance evaluation process
    • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Education: Master’s degree in speech, speech communication, or communication studies; or master’s degree in any discipline with 18 graduate semester hours in speech, speech communication, and/or communication studies.
  • Experience: College-level teaching experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Strong knowledge of speech communication theory, public speaking, and oral communication pedagogy
    • Ability to teach a range of communication courses (e.g., fundamentals of speech, interpersonal communication, group communication)
    • Ability to evaluate and provide constructive feedback on student oral presentations and communication competencies
    • Proficiency with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) and instructional technology
    • Strong interpersonal and classroom management skills
    • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, staff, and administration
    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple courses, deadlines, and reporting requirements
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to assess student learning outcomes and adjust instructional strategies
    • Commitment to student success and equitable, inclusive classroom practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree in speech, speech communication, or communication studies; or master’s degree in any discipline with 18 graduate semester hours in speech, speech communication, and/or communication studies.
  • Experience: Master’s degree in speech, speech communication, or communication studies.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (Same as required)
