Instructor of Science - Biology

About the role

Saint Mary’s School faculty members are designers of learning who bring the school’s mission to life, creating classrooms that nurture intellectual engagement and facilitate the School’s competencies. Faculty report to the Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs through their academic department leaders and are responsible for all aspects of the classes they teach, participation in departmental and school groups, and engagement in the student life program. Faculty also share in residential-life responsibilities, coach sports, or coordinate extracurricular activities.

Responsibilities

• Teach 5 sections of science, specifically Honors Biology and AP Biology.
• Design engaging and inspiring learning experiences for students.
• Embed key competencies into the learning environment when relevant.
• Serve as an enthusiastic and contributing member of the academic team.
• Use authentic feedback and assessment to report on students’ progress regularly.
• Utilize technology as a teaching tool to maximize student learning.
• Provide differentiated instruction in collaboration with the Student Support Team.
• Evaluate and update course materials annually.
• Serve as an advisor to students.
• Write recommendations for college applications, awards, scholarships, and honors.
• Communicate effectively with all stakeholders through regularly scheduled progress reports.
• Assist with monitoring and proctoring students in academic settings, including standardized testing, tutorial, and study hall.
• Support co- and extra-curricular programs.
• Engage in continuous professional growth through regular learning opportunities, including activities for licensing and accreditation.
• Develop and maintain a professional growth plan.
• Adopt and practice Saint Mary’s School Learning Principles and Principles of Professionalism.
• Familiarize yourself with and follow policies in the Employee Handbook.
• Support the school and its mission.
• Perform other duties as necessary or assigned.
• Fulfill weekend and night responsibilities to support the residential community and academic program as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in science or education and five (5) years of teaching experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience and qualifications to teach science, particularly biology and/or engineering, at multiple levels.
• Demonstrated ability to implement teaching techniques that foster learning with a diverse range of students.
• Proven interest in girls’ education.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to establish priorities.
• Demonstrated aptitude for collaboration with colleagues and academic leaders.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to use applicable technology tools.
• Enthusiasm and commitment toward professional development and lifelong learning.
• Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in education, science, or other appropriate field.
• Five years of teaching experience in independent high schools.
• Two or more years teaching science at the AP level, with relevant training from College Board.
• Experience in an all-girls educational environment.
• Ability to communicate and build relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
• Experience in building and developing science curriculum that evolves over time.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• May deal with stressful situations, including a variety of challenges, deadlines, and diverse contacts.
• Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment.
• Occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
• Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods.
• Regularly sit, talk, hear, and interact with students, parents, staff, and visitors.
• May work at a desk on the phone or in front of a computer screen.
• Ability to walk up and down three flights of stairs daily.
• Ability to travel for school-related events.
• Ability to drive and/or ride in school-owned vehicles, including a 14-passenger bus.
