Instructor in Stagecraft (Initial focus: Prop & Scene Design/Construction/Crew Management) (PT Pool)

This is a pool to fill a part-time Instructor position at Moorpark College in Stagecraft with an initial focus on Prop & Scene Design/Construction/Crew Management, beginning during the Fall 2026 semester.

About the Role

The Theatre Arts Department at Moorpark College seeks an accomplished prop and scenic designer and educator with advanced ability in construction as well as experience managing crews for a part-time faculty position. Due to the College's proximity to the Los Angeles metropolitan area, a successful candidate will have an established design portfolio of professional credentials in theatre and possibly the film and television industries. The ideal individual will possess a comprehensive understanding of the craft and art of scenic and prop design and build, demonstrate strong leadership skills, and have a desire to work in an educational environment at the community college level. The role involves effectively recruiting and mentoring a diverse and often marginalized student population.

Under the general direction of a dean, an Instructor (Non-Contract/Temporary) provides comprehensive classroom instruction to students from diverse backgrounds to facilitate the attainment of their academic or vocational objectives. Instructors may be employed up to 67% of a full-time assignment in accordance with Education Code sections 87482.5.

Moorpark College, one of three colleges in the Ventura County Community College District, was founded in 1967 and serves approximately 15,000 students. With a "students first" philosophy, it empowers its diverse community of learners to complete goals for academic transfer, basic skills, and career education. Responsibilities

• Provide academic instruction through lecture, lab, or performance courses; assess and develop cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher-order thinking skills among students.
• Advise and instruct students on programs of study, higher education institutions, lifelong learning resources, and effective study skills; refer students to support services and resources as appropriate.
• Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations; provide timely feedback.
• Plan and organize instruction according to approved course outlines and student learning outcomes to maximize student learning in alignment with department, college, and district goals.
• Maintain accurate records of course enrollment, attendance, student academic progress, and learning outcomes; prepare and submit related data and reports in a timely manner.
• Evaluate and select instructional materials such as textbooks, manuals, software, and tools in collaboration with discipline faculty; order materials according to campus bookstore procedures.
• Revise and update course content and materials based on new theory, application, and industry developments within the discipline.
• Update syllabi and collaborate with discipline faculty to assess and revise measurable student performance indicators for each course.
• Participate in curriculum and program development, committee work, and department, division, campus, and district meetings.
• Engage in articulation and matriculation activities and provide work direction to others as needed.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook. All coursework must be from a recognized accredited college or university.

• Any bachelor’s degree or higher and two years of professional experience, or
• Any associate degree and six years of professional experience, or
• The equivalent, or
• Possession of a valid California Community College Teaching Credential appropriate to the discipline.

Equivalency

The Ventura County Community College District recognizes that expertise in a discipline may be attained through various combinations of education, experience, and accomplishments. If your degree title does not exactly match the minimum qualifications but you believe your qualifications are equivalent, complete and submit the Supplemental Questionnaire for Equivalency with your application. The equivalency review is conducted by a subcommittee of discipline experts and coordinated by an Academic Senate President. For disciplines unique to a specific campus, the review may be conducted by the hiring committee along with an Academic Senate President. Note that the hiring committee may proceed with the recruitment process without waiting for equivalency results due to time constraints.
