Instructor in Residence - UConn Waterbury

UConn Waterbury, a federally designated Minority Serving Institution (MSI) recognized as both a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI), invites applications for a full-time, nine-month Instructor in Residence position in the Chemistry Department. The successful candidate will join a diverse, student-centered campus offering nine undergraduate majors and a commitment to inclusive, evidence-based pedagogy.

About the role

The Instructor in Residence will teach 10 undergraduate laboratories (or equivalent) per academic year, with primary responsibility for general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry lab sections. Additional duties include laboratory support, coordination, and management—preparing materials, maintaining safety standards, and collaborating with faculty across UConn’s campuses to implement inclusive, engaging laboratory experiences for a diverse student body.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate laboratory courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry.
• Prepare and manage materials for all laboratory classes during the academic year.
• Collaborate with faculty to develop and implement inclusive, evidence-based laboratory pedagogies that support diverse learning styles.
• Mentor undergraduate students and foster a neuro-inclusive learning environment.
• Adhere to current safety practices, waste and hazard management, and environmental health and safety protocols.
• Support broadening participation among underrepresented groups in STEM.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field (granted by start date).
• Experience teaching laboratory courses at the college level.
• Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety, waste management, and environmental health practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biology.
• Experience teaching laboratory courses beyond general chemistry (e.g., organic chemistry, biochemistry).
• Strong communication skills and a commitment to inclusive teaching practices.

Appointment Terms

This is a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure track position at the Waterbury campus, renewable contingent on satisfactory performance, mutual agreement, and availability of funds. The position may lead to long-term multi-year contracts, with a start date of January 1, 2027.
