Instructor in Drama/Theater Arts (Initial focus: Acting Part Time)

This is a pool to fill part-time instructor positions for face-to-face, on-ground courses at Ventura College for the Summer 2026, Fall 2026, and Spring 2027 semesters.

About the Role

The Department of Performing Arts at Ventura College seeks an accomplished performing artist and educator for a part-time faculty position teaching face-to-face, on-ground courses in acting and theatre. Due to the College's proximity to the Los Angeles metropolitan area, a successful candidate will have an established resume of professional credentials in the stage, film, and/or television industries. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of the craft and art of acting for the stage and/or camera (TV/Film). Applicants should demonstrate strong leadership skills, a desire to work in an educational environment at the community college level, and be able to effectively recruit and mentor a diverse and often marginalized student population.

Under the general direction of a dean, an Instructor (Non-Contract/Temporary) provides comprehensive classroom instruction to students from diverse backgrounds to facilitate the attainment of their academic or vocational objectives. Instructors may be employed up to 67% of a full-time assignment.

Established in 1925, Ventura College was one of the first community colleges in California and currently enrolls 14,500 students. Located approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles and 30 miles south of Santa Barbara, the 112-acre campus offers views of the Channel Islands from several spots on campus.

Responsibilities

• Provide academic instruction to students through lecture, lab, or performance courses; assess and develop cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher-order thinking skills.
• Advise and instruct students regarding programs of study, other institutions of higher education, lifelong learning resources, and effective study skills; refer students to support services as appropriate.
• Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations; provide timely feedback.
• Plan and organize instruction according to approved course outlines and student learning outcomes to maximize student learning in alignment with department, college, and district goals.
• Maintain current, accurate records of course enrollment, attendance, student academic progress, and student learning outcomes; prepare and submit related data and reports in a timely manner.
• Evaluate and select instructional materials such as textbooks, manuals, software, and tools in collaboration with discipline faculty; order instructional materials according to campus bookstore procedures.
• Revise and update course content and materials of instruction in accordance with new theory, application, and industry developments within the discipline or area of specialization.
• Update syllabi; collaborate with discipline faculty to assess and revise measurable student performance indicators for each course.
• Participate in curriculum and program development, committees, and department, division, campus, and district meetings as needed.
• Participate in articulation and matriculation-related activities.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors:

• Master's or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance, OR
• Bachelor's or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance AND Master's in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature, or humanities, OR
• Possession of a valid California Community College Teaching Credential appropriate to the discipline, OR
• Equivalent qualifications (see below).

All coursework must be from a recognized accredited college or university. If you completed your education at an institution outside the United States, additional information regarding foreign transcripts is required.

Equivalency

The Ventura County Community College District recognizes that candidates may attain expertise in a discipline through a variety of means. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments in the field may be judged as equivalent to the stated minimum qualifications. Candidates whose transcripts do not list the exact degree title required but believe they possess equivalent qualifications are encouraged to complete and submit the Supplemental Questionnaire for Equivalency for review by the Districtwide Equivalency Committee.

Equivalency reviews are conducted by a subcommittee of discipline experts coordinated by an Academic Senate President. For disciplines unique to a specific campus, the equivalency review may be conducted by the hiring committee along with an Academic Senate President. Note that the hiring committee may proceed with the recruitment process without the results of the equivalency review due to time constraints.
