About the role
Faculty are professional educators who have the primary responsibility of fulfilling Texas Southmost College’s (TSC) mission, vision, values, and goals of providing a quality education for all students enrolled at the College. The faculty member serves as a leader, teacher, advisor, and facilitator of learning, reporting to the College President through a chain of command and adhering to College policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Strive for continual improvement of student success by planning optimal learning environments, providing high‑quality instruction and advising, developing learning outcomes, assessing students and self, and engaging in ongoing professional development.
- Manage learning environments by creating accurate syllabi, maintaining attendance records, submitting grades, providing constructive feedback, and conducting classes punctually according to the prescribed schedule.
- Deliver effective instruction by developing curriculum in line with College policies, ensuring rigor and quality, designing inclusive learning activities, utilizing the College’s digital learning solution, and clearly communicating technology expectations.
- Enhance the student learning experience by integrating real‑life situations, encouraging critical thinking, interdisciplinary skills, teamwork, and academic literacy, and collaborating with employers when appropriate.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the College to construct and continuously improve measurable learning outcomes, including Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) core curriculum objectives and TSC‑specific objectives.
- Assess student learning by designing assessments that demonstrate growth, sequencing learning opportunities, and aligning assessments with instructional goals.
- Promote continual improvement by revising curriculum, using defined student learning outcomes to plan and evaluate teaching, participating in TSC’s institutional effectiveness program, completing mandatory performance evaluations, sharing best practices, and engaging in instructional or institutional research.
- Support learning through student engagement by creating a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active, collaborative learning, academic challenge, and interaction between students and faculty.
- Maintain a learning‑centered environment by being available to students during posted office hours.
- Support student learning by informing students of, and referring them to, appropriate academic and support services available at the College.
- Pursue professional development by staying current in academic fields, maintaining professional credentials, attending conferences, taking graduate courses or internal classes, and contributing to the discipline through research or publication.
- Participate collegially in departmental, college, and community service activities, serving on committees and engaging with professional and educational organizations.
- Accept and teach classes on varied schedules (morning, afternoon, evening, weekends) and at additional sites such as dual‑credit locations as assigned.
- Demonstrate sensitivity and respect for the diverse student population, colleagues, and community.
- Attend the workplace regularly, report punctually, and follow work schedules that may include on‑campus or off‑site locations, evenings, or weekends.
- Use interpersonal skills and sound judgment to coordinate duties among coworkers, supervisors, faculty, staff, students, and the public.
- Complete all required training and professional development sessions sponsored by the College.
- Support the values and institutional goals outlined in the College’s Strategic Plan.
- Perform duties in compliance with College standards, policies, and guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
The employee is frequently required to stand and occasionally required to walk, sit, use hands to handle objects, reach with arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear, and taste or smell. Frequent lifting/moving of up to 10 lb and occasional lifting/moving of up to 25 lb is required. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
