About the Role

The Instructor will work under the direct supervision of the Educational School-Based Content Specialist and Program Director, providing a safe, caring, and enriching environment for participants in the COMPASS/SONYC Programs. The role involves implementing project-based learning experiences using UAU’s educational and work-readiness curriculum to strengthen participants' skills. Instructors lead specialized activities such as STEAM, art, organized sports, music, literacy, academic support, and other educational enriching activities based on programmatic needs.

Responsibilities

• Develop curriculum and collaborate with the Program Director and Educational School-Based Content Specialist.
• Implement and assist with the development of specialized activity lesson plans and instructional materials for individualized and group lessons using varied teaching methods.
• Independently supervise and manage groups of participants.
• Translate lesson plans into engaging learning experiences that create a fun and visually appealing environment.
• Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to participants' physical, social, and emotional development.
• Facilitate a safe and productive learning environment for all participants.
• Model, enforce, teach, and develop age-appropriate social, physical, and emotional behaviors.
• Employ positive behavior management strategies for disruptive and negative behaviors.
• Demonstrate positive leadership and act as a role model to participants.
• Abide by all compliance and safety protocols as outlined by the NYC Department of Health, NYC Department of Education, OCFS, DYCD, and UAU.
• Participate in ongoing professional development.
• Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required; matriculated college student or higher from an accredited university or college preferred.
• Knowledge of a particular subject area or specialty such as STEAM, art, music, or organized sports.
• Minimum 2 years of experience working with children in a classroom setting, specifically with children under 13 years of age.
• Minimum 1 year of prior experience teaching or facilitating group activities with children under 13 years of age.
• Culturally competent with the ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures.
• Must pass reference and background checks.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong problem-solving and mathematical skills.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct and complete work independently.
• Willingness to take initiative and be flexible when needed.
• Ability to work collaboratively to achieve target objectives and outcomes.

Physical Requirements

• Occasionally required to stand, sit, or walk.
• Involves sitting approximately 30% of the day and standing or walking for the remainder.
• Must be able to remain in a stationary position for at least 20% of the time.
• May include working prolonged periods standing and walking, about 95% of the day.
• Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand; must be able to exchange accurate information.
• Ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
• Working both indoors and outdoors based on appropriate and safe weather conditions.

Pay

$40-$43 per hour (based on city, state, and/or federal contractual obligations and budgetary allowances).
